I like to find the local equivalent of a flea market or street bazaar or farmers market or whatever - because you get the real feel of a city that way.
I guess in San Francisco it would be Fishermans Wharf.

I'm with you on this one! Along those lines..locate the "cheap eats" because you don't have to spend a lot of money to get good food. Spend time searching the local newspaper's website.
Locate the cultural happenings. Act like a native.
