Hi All,
I'm posting this topic as place where fellow Java students that are taking the cattle drive can post a message to tell other "drivers" how far they are with the drive ie. which assigment they have completed.
With this I hope to create a means of supporting each other.
If I see that John Doe had completed assigment 1.2 four weeks ago and then silence, heck I can send him an e-mail and ask him why he had stopped, and if possible try and motivate him to start again.
Something like long distance runners do, help each other across the finish line.
Simply post something like : Java-1 a Hundred attemp 1
I will update your "status" on http://www.javaranch.com/ubb/Forum19/HTML/000332.html
Once your "status" has been updated on the Assigment Log please remove your posting this way we can keep this topic short. It makes my life easier. Thanks
Pse dont use this post to gripe about the nitpickers the Drive whatever, lets be thankfull what they do for us (how many brownies for this one "nitpickers"

Nudging each other is a good idea.
Well, I've passed Say and awaiting nitpicking for Say [4b]
The nipickers are doing a fantastic job and I don't want to be the one to bring a frown on their face.

Johannes,
I like your idea also. Especially when it comes to 4.b That one took me the longest, I think 7 tries. Well it was 7 tries for all of assignment 4, I did that one when it wasn't a requirement that you do part A first and then part B. It probably would have helped me if I did part A first and then part B.
But anyways, I know during my 6th or 7th try, when the code did work, it just wasn't in its best format, I came close to saying forget it a couple of times. I am so glad I stuck with it though.
I am currently working on assigment OOP-3 SortNames. Just made my second submission.
Bill

Sorry folks, I am trying to get to the servlet courses.
Marilyn, are the servlet classes open. I saw the link at the end of the OOP assignments that lead you to the servlet ones, but there wasn't a link on the main CattleDrive page, so I wasn't sure if they were open.
Also, with those assignments, I saw some of them have 6 or 7 classes with them. Would it be easier for you if we did those as a zipped attachment, or would it still be easeier in an email. I would think the email would get rather large.

We're in the process of revising the servlet assignment page. Give me a day or two.

We're sticking with the "in the body of the message" type submission. No attachments.

I've just started on this site myself and actually enjoy being "nitpicked" I'm only just learning Java and have no computer background. Up until I became disabled I've been
giving dogs haircuts and servicing fish tanks. I feel a little out of my depth and really need more feedback than what I get in a class of twenty. I'm on my third submition of the first assignment. Hopefully it'll be OK this time.

Hi
I am still at the 1st assign, i just submitted it for the third time. I made so many versions that the one i sent in last time wasn't even compiling. I hope this one gonna pass. I really appreciate the nitpicker when i understand what they want me to change in my code. So far i am starting to get the hints.
Thanks

I'm working on 1b. I've got prior programming experience so at first I thought "This is easy" and I just whipped off verisons and sent 'em in without much thought.
I'm now on my third or fourth wack at it, and learning the meaings of 'detail' and 'humility'.

It's a great idea letting everyone know where we are. I'm just starting the second part of Say, Java 4b. I decided to do searches here in the Cattle Drive forum to give me a better idea of what might be a good approach and found this thread.

Well, I am on my first revision of 1b. It took 4 tries for. At this rate, by the time I learn Java, they'll probably stop selling the product, .

Hi All,
I was going at a pretty good pace until I hit Say, formerly 1.4, now 4 I guess... That had to be more than a month ago.
It just didn't look like anything I had ever tried before, is that even useful?? Then got bogged down in work and so that's where I'm stuck. I haven't even given it a first shot yet.
It's encouraging to see that some of you have gotten through that assignment. I guess I just want to see how I would use something like Say in real programming situations. If I want to say this data is equal to that other data, don't I usually pull that out of a database rather than create a bunch of arrays?
Thanks,
~ Diana

Arrays are useful containers. It's good to know how to use them. Perhaps you'll want to store data from your database in an array sometime.

I doubt you'll ever need to use a program exactly like Say in a real programming situation. However, we're trying to help you learn general things, like how to build and access arrays, how to make your own methods, how to start small and build up to a larger program, etc.

So far this has been a really positive experience and I appreciate Marilyn very much too.
I'll see if I can squeeze this in on Thurday and give it a shot.
-Marilyn please go easy on me as I'm a bit intimidated by this one!

I hope this Say assignment isn't that dificult or I may just through in the towel. They are rushing us through so much at the school and the basic hope is just for any code to work never mind the how and what fors. I'm still waiting for a return on the first assignment but I cheated and already have the next one ready for submission. Hope the formatting problem isn't in my remote mail or I may never get done. Thanks for the support.

I just choked through 1.4. It was a tough chew. Compared to it 1.5 has been soup.
Good luck all.

Was just allowed to move on to even or odd assignment. Still having a problem with the code arriving in the same condition I sent it. Oh well. I'll figure something out I'm sure.

Multiple annoyance.
HAven't received a reply yet. So just sent it off again.
But have done upto Times.
The Say 4a was really fun, then I did Say 4b. Hey and that was even better.
I reckon if you want to do Say you should do 4a, then attempt 4b then go back and check what you did in 4a and submit 4a for revision.
I managed to shave 5 lines off my original 4a code that way.
Cheers.

FIVE?! Did you read http://www.javaranch.com/drive/about.jsp ?
It says, "You do the first one, and we'll tell you how you screwed it up. You send back the revision, and we repeat the process. If we can't find anything to pick at, we'll send you the instructor's solution. Then you move on to the next assignment."

I've received your submissions. You will received a reply shortly. We're running a little behind right now due to the volume of new students. Be patient.

I submitted Java-4b a couple days ago.
Took FOREVER to get through 4a. Marilyn must have had a few laughs over the way I was trying to approach it, and especially how hard I fought against changing that approach. Of course, once I abandoned my approach, my code got much leaner and easier to follow. Thanks for pushing me toward the light!

I finally passed 4b (Billion v. of Say)...only took 5 tries
Now, I'm on my 1st submission of Java-5...
Kind of scary how similar my version was to the instructors. Even the mothod names...*insert Twilight Zone music*
Thank you, thank you very much.

I have submitted Assignments 1a, 1b, and 2. I haven't been nitpicked yet. Are they avoiding me? I've just started Assignment 3 but my work schedule is brutal this week so I don't know when I'll get around to completing it. Anxiously awaiting my first nitpicking.

You should only be submitting one assignment at a time. If you haven't heard back from 1a yet, then check up on that one. Don't send any more until you have the ok to move forward.
