Firts I thought that I would post it in JR, but now I am here posting it in MD.
There is rule, and only one rule, BE NICE.
Can anyone explain this rule. Its very abstract term. I am not able to understand what does it mean.
Does talking abt WAR makes one 'not nice'? If talkign can be not nice then war itself .... But leave it for moment. We are discussing 'Be nice'
So I am just curious what does this BE NICE means.
Its very abstract term. A thing which could be nice for me might not be nice for you.
So who is going to decide what is nice?
If one person is going to decide, then Microsoft would send army to remove dictatorship from JR
So finally I just want this abstract 'Be Nice' term to be defined properly.

Treat every other person with respect. No insults.

Treat his opinion the way you would want him to treat your opinion. If his opinion is different than yours, even if he is wrong, he is entitled to his opinion. Just because he has an opinion different than yours does not make him a fool.

If you do this, you will not have to ask what is nice.

At school we were always told not to use the word 'nice'. In fact 'nice' has become quite a sarcastic term now.
Maybe polite, dignified or with a degree of integrity would be better?
But this is meaningless drivel, so maybe acting stupid would be better?
"One rule act stupid"

Very true and dont tell me this.
I know it very well.

So if one respects others view and listens what other say and say his own point also then everyone is NICE.
But how can one know that this thread is not nice even when that thread did not start (I mean when there is only one post)??

Contrary to popular belief, the "Ne Nice" rule, and the temporary ban on War topics are not related. Well, except that some of the War topics brought out the "not nice" side of some posters.
The one rule "Be Nice" has always been in effect.
The ban on war topics is just a temporary thing (I think) until we hash out a few issues related to such topics in MO.
Of course since not all of the folks with input to the conversation are available for periods of time - these decisions seem to drag out a LOOOOONG time - but truely, we are working on it.

BE NICE means post what ever you want, insult whom ever you want, but stick in a few ' ' ' ' and ' ' s here and there, so that you can always trick them saying you were only joking.

Of course to make nice of is an idiom, a token meaning something completely different than the individual words apart from one another. I'm sure all of us know what NICE means and the context here in MD. It would seem that, reading the posts on this thread we should be more concerned with the meaning of this word.

A murder in dictionary means when a man is dead medically. But one can murder without medically making that man dead.
So I dont want what dictionary says.
I want to know how can one make himself nice.
OR is it just group of mind who is going to decide what is nice and what is not.
Even if it is that what are the rules to qualify my post as NICE ?
Is there any rule or all it depends on my mood ?

To chime in here...
Unfortunately this is probably interpreted differently from person to person. Whereas I may draw the line at blatant personal insults or insults against groups of people, somebody else may draw the line somewhere else.
As was mentioned, there is some debate going on amongst the moderators right now, and hopefully this will be resolved soon. I would like to offer my personal apologies to anybody upset by this. If anybody has any concerns they would like addressed feel free to email or PM me (or any of the Sheriffs).

Ravish- I know the top of the forum currently says "one rule: be nice", but this isn't really complete. I read your post; it was perfectly nice. It would be unfair and incorrect for us to call it "not nice"; we're not doing that. (I'm not, anyway, and I don't think anyone else is.) Unfortunately it was a post about a controversial subject, which probably would have led to "not nice" posts from others later. Which is why we're currently asking people to avoid posts about the war, and generally closing or deleting those threads that do get posted anyway. Sorry.
We need to have a better way of making people aware of what our policies are in advance. Of course, this also requires that we moderators reach some agreement on what those policies are; that's something we've been working on in Moderators Only. When we get this hashed out better, we will post some clearer guidelines in this forum so people have a better idea what to expect. Until then, sorry for the inconvenience.

RK: I want to know how can one make himself nice.
One can make himself nice by following the all the rules. It is as simple as that.
And the first rule to be followed is - Be Nice.
Got it?

How about if everyone is forced to post in two parts, Thinking-frustation-aloud and Saying-opinions-nicely. For example,
Poster 1:
(thinking) XYZ is an idiot.
(saying) I am sorry, but I do not comprehend XYZ's proposal.
Poster 2:
(thinking) Poster1, You are an idiot.
(saying) I am sorry, but I do not comprehend your ideas. I have read the proposal and am sure it will work.
Those who want to "read through the other guys" can read the thinking part by dragging the mouse over the thinking line. Those who feel offended, can skip the thinking part.

Really Micheal, I want to know what does NICE means.
...
I want to know how can one make himself nice.

Maybe it's a cultural difference or perhaps a consequence of rearing, but from my point of view those statements are either rhetorical or insincere. They remind me of my 17-year-old son saying "What do you mean?" when I want to know what the hell he was thinking when he snuck out of the house at midnight and took his friends for a ride in the family car without permission. He knows exactly what I mean. Or on a more personal level when my wife says "Be nice", that means that I am probably being an asshole and disrespecting someone's dignity. I can choose to take that gentle advise and be diplomatic and respectful or I can go on being an asshole and tell the other party "F--- you and your dumbassed views". Either way, I know how to be nice and so does everyone. The only way to respond then to I want to know how can one make himself nice, is simply choose to be nice.
I am not suggesting Ravish that you have not been respectful or diplomatic in all of your debates in MD. It is an unfortunate consequence of a handfull of MD frequenters who have chosen the "F--- you and your dumbassed views" approach, ignoring the gentle voice in the back of their minds admonishing them to "Be nice", that the posters who were being nice now have to risk having their posts deleted because a subject is too controversial. Hell that reminds me of an LBJ speech in the mid '60s: too controversial.
So instead of saying be nice, I'll end this diatribe with BE

[MQ]Treat every other person with respect. No insults.

[RK]Obviously what you will give only that you will recieve.

This is what we are trying to avoid, the revolving door. "It's your fault." "No, it's your fault." Of course, as you say, if everyone is nice, then everyone will be nice in return, right?

[MQ]....Just because he has an opinion different than yours does not make him a fool.

[RK]Very true and don't tell me this. I know it very well.

I wasn't telling only you. In fact, believe it or not, I wasn't even thinking of you personally when I wrote that sentence. I was using "you" in the general sense.

[RK]So if one respects others view and listens what other say and say his own point also then everyone is NICE.

Yes.

Yes, earlier some people were not nice (see post above).

The moderators are working on guidelines.

Some posts are being closed right now because we are having a moritorium on discussions about the war. The "Be Nice" rule applies to all discussions, not only those about the war. However, it seems that a few people cannot discuss the war (in particular) and remain respectful and polite.

Yeah, Ravish, that is the way that it SHOULD be. It is just that in real life it is harder to make happen than it sounds.
For instance YOU were a gentleman about your post that got moved. But that is not true for all cases .
< sigh > I really hope that it won't be much longer until we can go back to the way that it used to be.
