I have done a tiny bit of reading on the subject.

What I don't really understand is when I should use the JMF if can achieve the same goal using the core libraries, is there a difference in efficiency?

To further illustrate my question, here are two programs that capture audio in Java, one uses the good ol' standard Java classes, the other uses JMF, does either program offer an advantage over the other? Seems like the "old school" version offers more control, specially when the program needs added functionality (turns into a voice-chat program, for example), but also has much more code.
