how much is a kilo of rice?

I don't usually notice this kind of thing but 1.15 UKP ( $1.80) seems a little too much.
It was American long grain if that makes a difference.

Let's see, today the exchange rate is 1.0949 dollars per euro for 2.2 pounds of rice works out to about 49 cents a pound.

at 0.0211193 dollars per rupee works out to about 19 cents a pound.

To be honest, I have no idea how they manage to sell it this cheap here in Ireland, where everything else is a rip-off! Indian Basmati rice would cost almost the same in India as well (just about a dollar per kilo)!! Eventhough we actually produce it there!!

Hmm. I just bought a jar of RiceSelect Jasmati -- my absolute favorite rice -- the other day. I think it was either USD $4.99 or $5.99 -- can't remember.
Looks like the jar is 36 oz. Guess I'll have to check when I get home how much that is in pounds/kilos.
(Dinner on Sunday was a traditional northern Italian chicken dish accompanied by Jasmati. I had never paired the two before. I don't think it was entirely successful: I think the floral quality of the rice was an odd mix with the rosemary, sage, garlic, and vinegar the chicken was cooked in.)
However the Jasmati works out spectacularly well when I make things like saffron rice or Hainanese chicken-rice.

I don't think that law suit will work out. The US law is very loose on terms. If a term is in common usage then it can not be protected. Thai farmers may think that "jasmine" means rice grown in Thailand but in the US it simply means a rice grown from a certain strain. It would be like trying to protect the name "corn". Not even "champagne" is protected in the US.
I should add that RiceTec is the brand of rice that I usually buy although I did recently buy a bag of basmati grown in India.

Indian rice sellers have figured out it's better to export, which is why the Indian govt has banned the export of non-basmati rice. I'm not saying it's a good thing, just why they did it.

Basmati rice will continue to cost what it does elsewhere I'm afraid, they'll hold out until they get their prices or sell elsewhere, the demand is high enough to refuse to pass the shipping savings on to the Indian buyer.
