Hi Friends,
I am one of the oldest member of javaranch. I joined this forum when I was a kid, back in may 2000, 3 years back. Ever since I have been in luv with this place. And many of my friends like it as well.
Since then I passed 3 certifications. I got a lot of help from Javaranch in preparing for the exams.

Thanks a zillion to the javaranch and the javaranchians. Special thanks to bartenders like ajith who are real 'Great'.

BTW, will I get some award for completing my 3 years here )

In order to be considered one of the oldest members you have to have a 3 digit or less member number.

Very convenient, Thomas. Personally I would require a member number of 300 or less.

Well with all the old numbers currently unused I could probably arrange that for myself.

Today I am going to meet the 'Toughest Guy in the Software'. That is what they call Steve Mills of IBM. I work for IBM India and njoy the status of a veteran. Yes I would be completing 5 years in IT this July. Already feeling very old and preaching all the new comers.

BTW it is always very easy to review the work of others than really doing the work. U can always find a 'fault' in others (read subordinate) work.
And that is what I am relishing.

Hey, dont say what crap I am writing.. Just increasing the number of my post. The number of posts is very less I am told. So here I am..

I think it does allow them

internally, are they stored as strings?

Melvin - it seems that some parts of the system expect the user id to be a non-negative integer, though other parts treat it as a string. I tried creating members for -1, -00000001, abc, abcdefghij - no luck getting them to show up.
Also I was disappointed to see that this number was already taken by a seemingly legitimate user.

Not sure, Paul. There was no user #1 at all until I created it the other day, just like there's currently no #2, or #8. #4 on the other hand was/is occupied by a "Shama Khaan" who has been mercilessly displaced by the evil Cindy. One guess: perhaps you did get #1 originally, but later decided you didn't like something about the account, so you registered a new account and deleted the old one? We in the past we weren't able to change display names, so maybe you registered as paulwheaton or trailboss, and later decided you'd rather be "Paul Wheaton"? Once you delete an account, there's no more record of it. But the account number won't be used again, barring some unscrupulous hacking. So that's how there are several gaps in the numbering.
Let's put it another way. Are you sure that the account you're now posting from is the same one you originally registered?
Another possibility is that there was some sort of transition in numbering during an upgrade from one system to another. I'm pretty sure member numbers have been the same as long as I've been here, even through upgrades, but I don't know if that's always been true. Did electric porkchop use UBB? Did you upgrade to get to JavaRanch, or did you just make cosmetic changes using the control panel? I know that when we were looking at migrating to Jive, all our user numbers came out differently. Perhaps something like that occurred in the past?

Members 1-73 were all members of the CIA who've been living in your radiator. They were checking that this board wasn't going to be used for organising "underground activities", but failed to cover their tracks by reassigning #1.
That's my theory anyway...don't believe me? Look out your window... ahh, too slow...missed them.

I am not 2 sure whether some mess up going on in javaranch to decrease the membership number. If so, please dont messup my membership #. I am ok with that cute little smart number .
BTW does anyone know the significance of # 1722?

I think we should make a policy when making someone a 'bar'tender/sheriff. His/Her membership # must be less less than or equal to #1722. Because mathematics says all the guys/gals with membership # less than 1722 are real smart So there.
