NAN and a long

Hello I have a long value which I read from a properties file.

How do I test for NaN please.

No such thing as NaN (not "NAN") for a long. You only get NaNs in floating point arithmetic.

Exactly. The Float and Double classes both have a static method called isNaN with which floats and doubles can be tested against NaN. A long however, will always have a value between Long.MIN_VALUE and Long.MAX_VALUE (inclusive).

Did you mean NumberFormatException instead of NaN by any chance?

Thank yo for your responses. I meant NaN. It appears one solution is to create a double then do the check.

How do you get a long into a double and get a NaN? It sounds impossible.

I agree. NaN should only occur when you perform a mathematical calculation that does not give a valid real (as in: not complex) result.

Like dividing by zero, or getting the square root of a negative number.
