Here are a few snapshots from my daughter's wedding last week. OK Sriraj, see if you can find Grandpa Michael the Infidel. The main wedding party
Ivy and Angel, my two girls
The Morris Mob
The Coup de Gras (Joe and Ivy)
The wedding went off real well. We were amazed considering how bad the rehearsal went. Amazingly, we had 1/2 a keg left over from the reception, but they wiped out most of the food. Grandpa Michael had to choke back the tears several times but the women cried like babies, even Angel who, trust me, was inappropriately named.
Come to think of it, I've never attended a Christian wedding. So how many days does it last and what are the main components of the wedding? I'm not sure about Hindu weddings either.. but I know there are 3 main components. 1. Engagement 2. Muhurtham (Main wedding ceremony) 3. Reception The entire wedding lasts about 3 days if done with all the Jing-Bang! A typical wedding crowd in India is around 750-1000 and the worst part of it is all the noisy little brats running around and spilling stuff all over the place. There have been many times when I wanted to spank one of those noisy kids silly My bro's wedding is this Friday and unfortunately I'm sitting half way around the world. Do you guys also give away the daughter to the grooms family? In Hindu marriages the daughter is given *into* the groom's family. Thereafter she officially becomes a part of the groom's family. That is, for example, if there is a tragedy in the bride's original family(god forbid) she is not expected to observe mourning beyond the customary 13 days (she may wish to observe longer, but not required officially). On the other hand if there is a tragedy in the groom's family (god forbid) she has to observe the mourning period for 1 year (required officially).

That's my oldest son Daniel. Hint: All my sons call me shorty.
So how many days does it last and what are the main components of the wedding? Just one, thank God! Their engagement lasted about a 18 months. Joe even asked me for her hand in marriage. That custom is rarely practiced in the US these days. Do you guys also give away the daughter to the grooms family? Not really. Joe came from a broken home (all too common these days) and he and Ivy spend more time here than at his mother's when they are home from college. A typical wedding crowd in India is around 750-1000 and the worst part of it is all the noisy little brats running around and spilling stuff all over the place. That's scarey. There were probably 150 at the wedding and around 60 at the reception.
My bro's wedding is this Friday and unfortunately I'm sitting half way around the world. That's too bad. For me, family is the most important thing in my life, and I always want to share their joy whenever I can, as I know you do. Since you can't be there, send him some cash and a copy of The Joy of Sex, the western version of the Kama Sutra.
hi The entire wedding lasts about 3 days if done with all the Jing-Bang! I dont think so! Such wedding are rare. Looks like they have lots of money to spend. A typical wedding crowd in India is around 750-1000 and the worst part of it is all the noisy little brats running around and spilling stuff all over the place. That is huge number. I havent seen such a wedding in my life but I think it does happen.
The entire wedding lasts about 3 days if done with all the Jing-Bang! Last wedding I remember in my home which stayed 3 days was way back in 1981, it was my aunt's[maternal] marriage. After that I dont remember any wedding whose duration was more than 1 and half day. A typical wedding crowd in India is around 750-1000 and the worst part of it is all the noisy little brats running around and spilling stuff all over the place. Its rare case [upto 300-400 can be said common/typical], but its for sure that lot of people are invited, generally its just a show off of wealth and influence. Number of invitees shows your power, wealth and influence In our family previously, elephants were counted and now cars/vehicles are counted. The number of vehicles shows your wealth.[These all are unofficial secrets which I am sharing with you ] True, its just show-off. but then who does not like to show his wealth My grand-father's wedding[1938] had 10 elephants and more than 30 horses. I guess all of you are speaking from the way things have started happening in your family or state. But in North India, 3-day weddings (or even more) are normal - specially in Delhi, Rajasthan, MP, UP and Bihar. And, it is not just those families who have money to throw around. 1 day for the pre-wedding ceremonies at both the groom's and bride's place, one day for wedding + reception organized by the bride's family, and one day for the reception organized by the groom's family. I think even the number of guests varies from family to family. I think more than 750 peopel attended my cousin's wedding just 2 years back. /Sara
I am from South Weddings must be really a costly affair.

1 day for the pre-wedding ceremonies at both the groom's and bride's place,
Are you counting pre/post-wedding ceremonies also and I was talking abt stay of Barat [groom's family and guests] In my home groom and bribe both need at least 15 days leave for marriage [honeymoon excluded]

Congrats to you, your daughter, and the rest of your family, and best wishes for the future. Thanks Jason. What's really strange about my kids is they all seem to gravitate towards small mates. The shortest of the three boys is 6'3 yet each of them have girl friends ranging from 5'0 to 5'3. Joe is only 5'4. My oldest son Daniel is always joking with him, saying things like "You have to be this tall (holding up a hand), to tap the keg."
