He he he...
I was aware about the Ping review several years ago. In fact, while I was at a used book sale I saw that book and bought it solely based on that one review from Amazon. It now sits on my self next to my O'Reilly books. (Not kidding, only paid $0.50 for it...)

It is believed to be the review with the highest number of helpful votes on amazon.

By the way, the author of that review has only four reviews on amazon. None of his other reviews come close to capturing the pure genius of Ping nor do they have more than 3 positive votes.

Which probably means that after this happened, Amazon figured out how to improve its vote-filtering to eliminate certain forms of ballot-stuffing.

Actually amazon has always had software to prevent ballot stuffing. This particular case came from the review being slash-dotted.

Did you read the Spotlight review, not the two Editoril reviews above it? Keep reading, and you'll even find a great quote from Dante regarding the Windows API

Who can read that passage on the Windows API ("Obscure, profound it was, and nebulous, So that by fixing on its depths my sight -- Nothing whatever I discerned therein."), without shaking their head with deep understanding. But I digress.
