Great re-runs of the 80's, 70's ; or 60's

Were you ever embarassed by an elder sibling in that great era or were you in the thick of it and have found some are having a second (or third) comeback ?
What would your list of great re-runs be? Or what would your suggestion for a re-run be?
I'm thinking of music mainly, but any other categories welcome.
Fashion - I'm told we are seeing a toned-down re-run of the 60's !
Software - ( well , you still hear that some tools aren't what they used to be )
Books -

My suggestions would be :
Madpie - Madonna singing American pie A great re-run! I don't know who sang/wrote the original. But there definitely was an original.
Suggestions for a re-run would be some by the Police:
'Message in a Bottle'
'Walking on the Moon'
'Zenyatta Mondatta' are complete tales which I am only discovering now.
'Invisible Sun' a brooding atmospheric comment on Northern Ireland.
'Every Little Thing She Does is Magic' Carribean carnival
'Don't Get Too Close To Me' - temptations that a teacher goes through-Sting used to be a teacher.

And of course 'Every Breath You Take'
I could go on, and on ,and on.....
Books - A re-write of GoF

What I wouldn't want a re-run of:
Cherie Blair's rendition of The Beatles "When I'm 64"

You aren't talking about re-runs but rather re-makes.
"Every Breath You Take" was redone by Puff Daddy.

Madpie - Madonna singing American pie A great re-run! I don't know who sang/wrote the original. But there definitely was an original.
The original was Don McLean, and it went for 8 minutes, basically describing his memories as a teenager (and a tribute/lambastment to various rockers from his teenage years). While the Madonna song was OK, I didnt like having it so short (it is so annoying / embarassing when you are singing along, and then sudenly you are singing words that are not in the current version ), and since she was not singing about her own experiences, it didn't have the same impact as when Don McLean sang it.
That is often a problem on talent quests - people choose to cover songs that had emotional impact for the original artist, but without that tie, the cover just sounds flat.
I can never pick what will be a good song to be covered in later years. Usually when I am listening to a song, I like it as is, and cannot imagine it any other way. Sometimes though a cover comes out and I think "yeah - good interpretation".
I love both the Meatloaf version and Jim Steinman's version of songs that they have both recorded. But it is so hard to get Jim Steinman's recordings
I loved the original Police version of "Don't stand so close to me", but I thought the later version (was that also Police, or just Sting?) was too bland.

Sorry, Thomas Paul, I meant re-makes.
I haven't heard the Puff Daddy re-make (Should I or shouldn't I?)
Please God, no one re-make this one:
(Not so) O Holy Night ( I credited Richard Huggins with this until I found out the artist was Homer Slockenheimer. Well, what would you expect?)
Andrew, thanks! I'll look up the original Don version of American Pie and *re-make* my mind.

Well I think the standard term (in the US at least) is "cover", though "re-make" is certainly more descriptive for those unfamiliar with "cover".
Hurm. I really can't think of any particular favorite covers at the moment; I pay more attention to the originals.

I concur on the Joan Jett cover of Crimson and Clover. Time to break out Kazaa. Here are a few more for consideration (in no particular order):
Walk This Way (Aerosmith) - Run DMC
99 Red Balloons (Nene) - Goldfinger
Smooth Criminal (Michael Jackson) - Alien Ant Farm
Boys of Summer (Don Henley) - The Ataris
Let's Do It (Cole Porter) - Joan Jett and Paul Westerberg
What a Wonderful World (Louis Armstrong) - Joey Ramone
I Shot the Sheriff (Bob Marley) - Eric Clapton
No Woman No Cry (Bob Marley) - Sublime
Now I'm not saying that the remakes above are necessarily better than the originals, but they are often a pretty good take on the original.

I believe Sting sang this solo on one of his recent albums. I can't remember it. Must have been too bland. And I should remember it is "Don't stand so close to me".
A Joan Jett re-make seems to be a new one to watch out for, Paul and Jason.

Here is a good analysis of American Pie.
I found the Madonna version absolutly horrid. There are some songs that should never be re-made. And I think American Pie is one of them.

Let's Do It (Cole Porter) - Joan Jett and Paul Westerberg
Any Cole Porter tune has been covered so many times it's fruitless to count, I think. But Joan Jett is not one of the usual suspects for this, I guess.
I'll add two: Beethoven's 9th, 4th movement ("Ode to Joy"), and Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody. Both performed by the California Guitar Trio, back-to-back as the encore for their live show. Great fun.

My all time fav cover has to be The Presidents of the United States of America doing "Video Killed the Radio Star".
Also a band called Cake do a version of "I Will Survive" which works really well. Its sung by a guy but it still sounds like he means it!

Bridge Over Troubled Water - Clay Aiken.
Ok, seriously, Smashing Pumpkins did Landslide which i really liked. The Chicks with Dicks OOPS, I mean Dixie Chicks did Landslide too, but not nearly as well as Billy Corgan.
Scott Stapp of Creed (Whom I used to like, but now I don't, another story) did several songs on a Doors tribute album that was really amazing.

Baby I don't care - Elvis Presley (original)
A Hard Rains A-Gonna Fall - Bob Dylan )
Rock n Roll - John Lennon
Pin Ups - David Bowie
Smoke Gets In Your Eyes
The Price of Love -Everly Brothers

Thanks for the original + history. I agree the original is deep when put into musical historical context.
More nominations for the great and good:
Pink Floyd - Another Brick in the Wall ( another teacher one I think a student - teacher protest)
Blue -All Rise ( I just like it)

I wouldn't recommend KazaaLite either, Jason. Did you check your WINNT folder for a 'cache' and 'cache32' folders?
In my box, Kazaalite had created these folders and had filled them with more than 30 MB of crack.exe's for almost every half-decent software you can imagine! It was the same case with a handful of Kazaalite users that I checked with.
As they say, there's nothing as a 'free lunch'!

Keeping it on track:
I shot the Sheriff ( cover by Eric Clapton) - Bob Marley (original)
Shot the Sheriff
( I am only joking, Thomas Paul. I hope you don't mind some leg-pulling )
As far as the song goes - I'd almost forgotten that one.
Bob Marley had wanted it to be "I Shot the Police" but changed it to avoid trouble with the local police.
There was a British Band who potentially could have done some Marley covers, but I cannot remember the band's name. An all white band that had a Reggae sound to their music."Red,red wine" a single of theirs

Thanks. Red,red Wine was originally written by Neil Diamond.
UB40 covered it in early 80's and Neil D released his version in the late 80's. (I'm not sure who was covering who in that case).

A great remake AND a one-hit wonder all in one:
Tainted Love, by Soft Cell.

Great synth-pop before there really was such a thing. Two guys with synthesizers and REALLY bad hairdos.

Ed Cobb originally wrote the song for The Standells, who turned it down, and he instead gave it to Gloria Jones in the late 60's. She sang it and nobody cared, that is until the mid 70's where it became something of an underground anthem in Britain. Eventually, the boys of Soft Cell picked it up and turned it into a nine-minute electro-pop opus (it also covered "Where Did Our Love Go"), which became the number one single of 1981.
It has since been covered by Prozac+ and Marilyn Manson, among others.

It might be fun to see what analysis of that song exist on the web (if any). From memory (so I will accept all corrections) the songwritter said that the words were put together for their rhyming value only - no deeper meaning.
