use of String.indexOf(String)

Hello,
I don't understand the behavior of the following code.
I am trying to simply concatenate String input with the String "." if the String "." doesn't already exist within String input. This simple code is simply not doing that. I must be misunderstanding something simple and obvious.
Note: String input is declared outside of this program block.

if (".".indexOf(input) < 0) {
    input = input + ".";
}

I'd appreciate your two cents.

I've figured it out. I had my Strings reversed.
The correct code is:

if (input.indexOf(".") < 0) {
    input = input + ".";
}
