Yes, its that time of the year again! And believe you me, Christmas in the west feels like a bank holiday weekend compared to the energy and celebrations in Kerala around this time.
Sad that I couldn’t make it home for Onam even this year, but I'll have a little Onam on me own here anyway.

I have not been home for Diwali/Holi/Dashera for last one and half year.
I was thinking this time to go on Diwali.. but it seems that I wont be able to go...

Here in Canberra there are around a hundred Malu families,
We have a small onam celebration this weekend with some cultural programs.
Each family will bring along a dish and that would make up a small buffet.
This year would be my wife�s, who is Chinese, first Onam with family and friends.

Onam is one of the greatest festivals of Kerala(South Indian state). (Sunitha Raghu/Ashok Mash/Ajay Mathew possibly from this state).

Everything is pretty much the same, except Guinness may be (quit alcohol!).

However, since my first post in this thread, Malayalee population has gone up considerably here in Dublin (thanks to over stretched health service system in this country, which would fail, without emigrant doctors and nurses), there�s just about enough people here to arrange not one, but two different Onam celebrations; which would normally start two hours later than announced, with over excited little girls and their even more excited mammies doing the same old Mohiniyattam steps or little Britney Spears numbers with bollywood dance routines, while the �boyz� (pot bellied, middle aged men really) use this rare occasion away from their other halves watchful eyes for a few shots of Jack Daniels or Smirnoffs; and of course, everyone is still waiting for Maveli� Ironic, considering its been long since Onam has anything to do with the good old kingdom of honesty and prosperity � for decades now, Onam is almost entirely driven by the nostalgic mini-mavelis from outside Kerala!
