i've installed j2re1.4.... and have seen that java.exe has been copied into the system32 and system folders, however, i still cannot access the "jar" command in the command line in windows2000 (professional). i'm not really sure what to do, i'm trying to create an executable jar, but without the jar command, that's a no-go! help is appreciated.

Make sure JAVA_HOME\bin is on the path.
JAVA_HOME = your jdk install dir

It may be because you got the JRE instead of the JDK. I'm not 100% sure, though.. as I've never downloaded the jre.

Brian's right. (Jessica too, of course. ) The JRE does not allow you to create jar files; you need to get the SDK for that.

success! i installed the SDK, adjusted PATH, and it works. thanks everyone.
