I am not complaining but, I have noticed that nearly every thing you need or want from SDK to IDE even plug-ins are all free in JAVA. At some point someone has to make money. What advantage do these companies have in giving everything away? With VB I paid through the nose for everything - go figure.

Well, Sun makes their money from selling lots of Solaris and etc. Unix type machines. It is in their best interest if all the applications out there are compatible with something other than Windows OS's. So they offer Java for free to keep from getting strangled by application needs.
It seems that the programming community really LIKES this bit about not paying for a programming environment (although there are still IDE's to be paid for if you want).
MicroSoft on the other hand makes most of their money from selling software, including Windows. Therefore it is in their best interest if programmers write applications that MUST be run on Windows machines.
