I found this resource really good:
http://developer.java.sun.com/developer/onlineTraining/new2java/stepbystep.html
There are many beginner links to get you started, and the Build an Application, tutorial by Dana Nourie I found especially helpful because she explains every step of the process without going too fast (some of these tutorials come from http://www.jguru.com/learn/index.jsp and some have solutions).
I'd also try:
http://javaboutique.internet.com/tutorials/Java_by_Example/index.html
Also, signing up for the Nit Picking process at this site has helped me alot based on the principle of learning-by-doing. And its pretty good value for money (do I get a free book now? ).
I guess the important thing (in studying anything) is to read from many different sources; some will explain different aspects of Java better or worse than other sources, so shop around and good luck!
Hope that helps

Don't get me started about those stupid light bulbs.
