my suggestion:
1) read posts scjp forum;
2) go over as many books as possible, to find the one suit you the most

I like exam crams book although I'm a long time c programmer so I dont need the lengthy OOP explanation.

But I believe exam cram is the best and then take the mock exams on this site and then write 10 programs over the topic you missed and then take another
Ohh yeah to test the basic concepts is the round up game on this site. Look for elsie. If you don't make 100% every time then you still have more understanding to do.
my -.02 cents

and another suggestion, this may not sound very well. failing once is perhaps the best preparation. you will know what to do. i am not joking. the cost of one exam is $125. make sure you get the best buy. and good luck with exam!

Get one or two good books from the Ranch list and then hit a variety of the mocks to test your knowledge, don't just focus on one mock system. I've used the mocks listed at this site for two Java exams and my scores were very close (within 5 percent) to my mock averages. The more mocks you do the better you'll know where you'd stand with the real exam.

OK, I just cannot let this one go
Bert and I have a Java Certification study guide, and it is currently the number one selling Java book on Amazon. It is not a Head First book, I wish it were, but if you go the javaranch SCJP forum, people seem to be passing the test, often as a result of reading only our book.
(Yes, a shameless plug, but heck -- since this is our book promotion week, figured I'd go for it. )
cheers,
