When running a program, is there any way to halt the program while executing
it to see what the variable values are at that stage (similar to a echo or
halting and requesting user input or a enter dummy value)?

Now, as to your question: yes, Eclipse and JBuilder have fine graphical debuggers. There's also jdb, a command-line debugger that comes with the JDK.
