As much as I'm a big fan of colorful language, when I see certain words I cringe. After all, I'm sure there are some folks that are a bit more wholesome than I am that get scared off by certain words. Further, I kinda wonder a little about younger folk wandering through these parts.
If you hold down your shift key, you can get the ole standard substitue: #%&*!
Hey Jim! Maybe we can have an emoticon that can be a star, swirly, lightning bolt and an exclamation point!
I'm not saying I want to ban it. After all, there could be a joke that depends on a precise word. I'm just asking that we avoid the use where possible.
I rather like the idea that if my Aunt comes through here, the odds are good that she can get a chuckle without getting too offended. Or that my kids can come through here and my wife won't slap the crap out of me.
On that note:
-----------------
There's a farmer with three daughters ....
He's sitting on the porch when a fella walks up and says "Hi! My name's Freddy. I'm here to pick up Betty. We're going out for Spaghetti. Is she ready?"
The farmer goes inside and brings out one daughter.
Later, another fella walks up and says "Hi! My name's Joe. I'm here to pick up Flo. We're going to the Show. Is she ready to go?"
The farmer goes inside and brings out one daughter.
Later, another fella walks up and says "The name's Buck" and the farmer shoots him.

PW: Later, another fella walks up and says "The name's Buck" and the farmer shoots him.
Makes me wonder by how much the implied obsenety (such as above) is less obsene compared to the explicit obsenety. Could be a good separate topic to discuss in MD!

I spilt coffee onto my keyboard the other day and the keyboard taught me a thing or two about the suggestiveness of ^*^&*^*$%!" embedded within text.
Now that I am abstaining from coffee totally my head keeps repeating them out loud. I shall overcome this seizure of my mind by thinking pure thoughts and drinking gallons of water.

I remember telling the joke once to mixed company. The kids didn't get it!
The cool thing about this joke is that the level of humor comes from the person listening to it. After all, one could say that Buck was going to take the daughter to work on his truck! The farmer may think his daughter is a dainty flower and shouldn't get all greasy!
Along those lines, here's another great one for mixed company: What's long and hard and full of see-men? A submarine!
The point of my message is that that I don't want to ban profanity, but I would like to see it substituted where it doesn't kill the joke. I would rather have a profane joke than no joke. But if the same joke can be told with the profanity toned down, I would prefer that.

Paul sent me a file with this:

I was about to install it, but now I'm going to wait a bit to see what other nifty smilies are suggested for this, and which people prefer. Angela's suggestions are good too...

Hi,
I think we should allow only the words that use on US free TV because as comparing to western countries standard, US media is very conservative. Java Ranch is not just an educational and informative site, this site has an edge over others on internet we are funny folks. I think each member do have the ability to self-censorship as I notice some using ***. It is a good spirit. Everything else only makes the comment more cryptics.

MCao

I like Angela's red censored smilie.
On one mailing list I belong to, there was an issue with posts being blocks by profanity filters, so people started using a peculiar kind of abbreviation. You know how "internationalization" is abbreviated "i18n"? Well, you can also use this scheme with four-letter words to create, e.g., s2t. I occasionally do that here.

I love Angela's "red & sensored" icon, -- well thought and clever. I think I will replace all the four-letter words in my future posts with that instant graemlin!

Oh, I would never say something like that to a lady, especially Angela. I'll reserve that graemlin to communicating with the democrats, absolutists, patriots, and programmers who use Vectors.

Flames instead of the buttoned up equal sign may be better.
I like Angela's icon but for a bit of variety......

buttoned up - thinking it but not saying.
censored - Alright it has been said.
flames - Really letting rip.

Hmmmm, speaking of censoring.... maybe moderators could do a little message editing complete with censoring of certain words.

Somebody here being worried about profanity is kind of funny. I couldn't care less about profanity - but I find the misogyny to be quite disturbing.
We live in a strange world. Apparently, the bulletin board known round the world for it's misogenist remarks is too "delicate and sensitive" for profanity.

Are you saying that JavaRanch is known around the world for misogeny? Do you have any evidence of this?

I queried Googgle for "JavaRanch+misogyny" and "JavaRanch+misogynism". No results among more than 3.3 billion pages indexed by Google. Maybe the world community wants to keep it a secret? Or perhaps it's hidden from the world in "Moderators Only", where misogynism is identified as the primary mission of JavaRanch?

I've added the icon to our standard list, since that seemed most popular. I'm thinking that would be redundant, but I could add it too if Paul wants.

(Is there a begging icon?) Please don't resurrect that mindless thread!
I have seen some conversations be so thought-provoking and stimulating enough to make me research the matter to learn more, and ~THAT~ conversation, (as a few more sporadic ones here and there), was extemely confusing. I didn't understand why people were trying so hard to hurt others???

Well, if comments are going to be made about that topic at all, I'd prefer they be in that thread where they're actually relevant. Otherwise I may have to start using myself to clean this thread up.

That way the hardened, brash "shove-it-in-your-face" red-neck trucker types here who are too delicate & sensitive to say "poop" - have something to use.

The forbidden fruit is sweet. Even the moderators and the authors need to release themselves once in a while, especially when encouraged. And all it takes is to arrange the letters in a certain sequence. Oh, only if everything else was that easy!
