I can get a great deal on a bunch of used Java books. I was wondering for a beginner still learning the basics like myself is it OK to use these books even though I am using the java2 compiler? I was assuming that the diffrences for someone on my level would be minor enough. I could be wrong, I have been on every other one of my posts.

I'm not sure I understand all of the implications in your post. Were some of these books written for pre-Java 2?
Java's not so old that older good Java books won't likely hold some good information. But don't forget that the internet is chalk full of helpful resources that cost nothing.
Here is a list of free on-line Java tutorials and books that I have found useful:
  • Sun's Java Tutorial
  • Introduction to Computer Science using Java by Bradley Kjell
  • Introduction to Programming Using Java by David J. Eck
  • Dick Baldwin's Java Programming Tutorials
  • Interactive Programming In Java by Lynn Andrea Stein
  • Bruce Eckel's Thinking In Java
