I would recommend you to read java certification book,
A Programmer's Guide to Java Certification,
A Comprehensive Primer BY
Khalid A. Mughal & Rolf W. Rasmussen
All your JAVA doubts/concepts will be cleared once you go through this book.It is really a very helpful book.

I'm not completely sure what the author of that statement means, but I'd guess they're trying to explain that any reference in Java could possible refer to null.
MyObject o = null;
MyInterface i = null;
MyObject[] a = null;

It is sorta covered in the JavaRanch Style Guide.
