Difference between client and server VM

The java VM has two options -client and -server. Does it mean that when I am deploying my code to JBoss, I should make sure that -server option is used ? Is this merely for performance improvements ?

Assuming here that you are referring to HotSpot, then yes, and yes. What you are actually doing is switching to a different VM, the default is the client VM, -server will mean JBoss uses the Server VM which has been designed for long running server apps. Hava a look at http://java.sun.com/products/hotspot/ if you want to know more.
