Interesting Glossary of Java

+Pie Number of slices to send: Send
May we start a java glossary section that may entertain us with reference to some sort of history or joke? I am providing here one - Java.

Java

Java was initially named as Oak language. When Sun went for trademark registration of OAK they faced some legal problems as there was already another language registered as OAK and hence they renamed it to Java. The members of the Green Project Team that created this beautiful language, often used to visit a restaurant where they had a cup of Java, one kind of coffee (possibly from Java Islands of Indonesia). They kept the name of the language after that.

I thought the Language was called java because the language was first created to be used on a small coffee machine and was later adopted becuase of how good it was and expanded.

Roeady Green has created a collection of interesting tidbits worth reading at http://mindprod.com/jgloss/jgloss.html

Note that you might like to make use of http://faq.javaranch.com to create a glossary of sorts.

Ashik, you happen to be correct. In fact this restaurant was just across the road where the Green Team was working. They got so obsessed of drinking coffee that they named Java (language) after it. This also explains the cup of coffee as Java's symbol

P.S. Thank god they were'nt much into drinking or else we would be programming in Fosters. (-hick-) lol.

It also explains the "signature" of a class file. Find an editor that lets you look at a file in hex - you can use the old DOS debug on Windows machines. See the first four bytes of any class file.

And that's too funny...
