I am finishing Salam Pax's book and there is a charming story. It was during looting period. Imagine that you a an Iraqi, your place (or whatever) is being looted, there are Americans close enough, so you can ask for help... Except that you don't speak English! So what do you do?

Sometimes, if it is not too troublesome, they will go check on what is happening if you jump in front of their tanks shouting “Ali Baba, Ali Baba!!”. Cute, isn’t it? We have found common ground in the stories of 1001 nights. Everybody knows the story of Ali Baba and the 40 thieves, but not everybody speaks English. So if you are lucky the Americans will come to check what Ali Baba is doing, sometimes they care sometimes they don’t.

So basically you go and cry "Ali Baba!"

I saw 'interlingual communications' and thought this might be about French kissing. Dang.

Wow pretty ingenious, I must admit, but young GenX/Y G.I.s today probably know nothing of Ali Baba & the 40 theives. These poor kids probably thought they were hearing some last minute jihad pray before getting blown to smithereens by a suicide bomber.
