How does everybody feel when the developer of a software system knows that his/her system will replance N human beings & knows that these human beings will actually end up losing their jobs?
I think we developers tend not to look at this at all (denial perhaps?). I recently became aware of the fact that the system that I'm developing has (as one of) the objective of halving an department's staff. Some will probably get absorbed in other departments; but some will likely lose their jobs.

More importantly, what is the benefit gained out of your system. I think the efficiency gained is worth it in the long run. Do you know that today there are software products that do the coding for you? For instance, take Macromedia Dreamweaver.. most of the Javascript / DHTML work that was done by a fully paid developer about 5 years ago is now done by the product for free. It wont be long before we see a Java coding product.. I've heard that there are already products out there that produce pseudo-code.
Machines / Innovation will always replace manual labor and as much as we may not like the thought we have to accept that as the natural path of progress. Fifty years ago there were several people employed to do the most menial of tasks in the western hemisphere, today one person with a machine can do the entire work. Is this good? I think so..
