So I ended up buying the PlayStation 2 for my daughter after looking at all the options. I think it turned out to be the right choice. She was griping about some Mario game that you can only get for GameCube but since I got her the SpongeBob game she has been very happy.
Anyway, I went out and got a game for myself. The game from the title of this thread was $15 used so it seemed like a good deal. It's a pretty good first person shoot-em-up (what can be bad about a game that lets you shoot Nazis) but boy do I suck at these games.

My son routinely kicks my ass at Dragonball Z Budokai. Now he's got the follow-on to that title, as well as Quidditch.
You may notice the kids let you on the system long enough to play the games, but not long enough to get good at them...

Get your own back, get Madden 2004 and show them whos boss
One game Im really enjoying is Simpsons Hit and Run on the PS2. Its a Grand Theft Auto clone, but without the gore and guns (you can kick folk and run them over, but theyll get back up without a scratch), and it has all that Simpsons humour that you'll either love or hate.

I ended up with the Xbox. My wife got it for me for Christmas, along with the HDTV adapter. So far the graphics are quite impressive (although the 480p version of Harry Potter is very dark on my TV). Some of the effects are simply mind-boggling. I love pushing a little switch on my controller and watching my "flashlight" go on in HALO. The games get pretty immersive.
So far, however, I haven't gotten a game past 480p. My daughter gets the Simpson's game on her birthday (she loves Crazy Taxi, a similar game, so she should enjoy this). She's also getting Dance Dance Revolution, a dancing game.
I'm still waiting for Syberia to show up. When it does, I will let you know what 1080i looks like on a big screen.

... or drug deals, prostitutes, street racing, joy-riding, car bombs, gangland hits, drive-by shootings, random murder sprees, intimidation, robbery, kidnapping, flame-throwers, katanas, chainsaws and uzis. All very distasteful and heaps of fun

Yup its got all that, and both GTA 3 and Vice City are some of the best games Ive ever played; but I dont think Thomas will be sitting down to play either game with his daughter

Totally! I hear GTA4 is definitely in the works, though there are no other details apart from that. I'd love them to remake the London 1966 extension they did for PSX using a GTA3/4 engine.

GTA: San Andreas will be out for the PS2 this Xmas. If your looking for driving games set in London, try The Getaway which is a great game and features many London landmarks.
Regarding GTA, having played the game I think the main appeal for me is the complete freedom to go and do as you please. You can be a criminal or you can do missions driving a taxi, an ambulance, a fire engine. You can even play as a cop and do the vigilante missions, chasing down criminals. And dont forget the soundtrack; GTA: Vice City had an absolute awesome soundtrack
Sure the violence is there, but there are a lot of violent games out there and I think its GTA's freedom that sets it apart from the rest. However the game does invite controversey and criticism when it features play mechanics such as picking up prostitutes to regain health, paying them and then killing them to get the money back!

GTA will never be in my house. We tend to buy games like Sponge Bob and Finding Nemo. MOH is not that violent. No blood and gore. Doom is 100X more violent. MOH is shoot the guy, he falls down, and then he disappears. No blood. No bullet holes in people (only in walls).

For the Xbox:
Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic is a VERY nice RPG/FPS. Skills, abilities, experience points, upgradeable weapons, quests, all very cool. Not a ton of blood and gore - you shoot people and they die. Looting their bodies is a requirement and is a little tacky, but non-gorey. Then the bodies disappear.
Syberia, on the other hand, is entirely non-violent so far and VERY bizarre.. and absolutely breathtaking. It plays at a resolution of up to 1080i, so you need an HDTV to get the full effects, but it's totally bizarre. It's a quest game, like Myst, and it's set in what looks to be an Eastern European town that was basically the company town of a master automaton maker. There are all kinds of automatons all over the place, and it's just - different. But the scenery is stunning.

Local Haitian groups here in South Florida want it banned, and have staged demonstrations, have filed lawsuits, etc, because somewhere some character in the game at some point says "Kill all the Haitians"

Man.. My experience with the console games are very bad. I bought PS1 sometimes back and tried "Command and Conquer". It was one h**l of a play. I had hardtime selecting the items. Even the dumb computer beats me . My niece tried it for some time and she also lost interest. I do play lots of computer games though.
