It's a very newbie non-technical question, but I wonder: Java is great and fun language, but takes money to continue developing it - so where does Sun make money to pay its monthly bills? My common sense can't believe the company solely rely on the good will of the community to work for free because its cool.

They sell training, tools, hardware, etc. etc..
Java for Sun is in large part public relations, and in part an enabling technology for selling other things.

Absolutely not. Sun were a server manufacturer before the invention of Java, and continue to be that (amoungst other things) now. Whether they actually make any money from it is debatable.

I didn't mean to imply that Sun sells servers only because they have Java
I do think they make money from Java, but indeed I suspect direct income from the platform is low (the majority coming from increased sales in other areas indirectly caused by brandname recognition linked to the Java brand).

Sorry Jeroen, that post wasn't directed at you, it was a reply to Filipe Pomar's question. You must have posted while I was still writting my reply . No offense intended.

I just passed the SCJP1.4 exam and wanted to post this appreciation note to thank everyone who helped me understand Java a little better. Without your help this personal achievement wouldn't be possible.
