According to one reputable source the earth is banana shaped.
According to another it's round, just like a pancake.
Both are sources I trust greatly, but their statements seem contradictory.
How to find out a way to either disprove one or the other or better yet a way to consolidate both statements?

I think it's clear enough, Jerome. The world is a banana-nut pancake!

For those who didn't get the reference that Bert and I were alluding to:

A well-known scientist (some say it was Bertrand Russell) once gave a public lecture on astronomy. He described how the earth orbits around the sun and how the sun, in turn, orbits around the centre of a vast collection of stars called our galaxy.
At the end of the lecture, a little old lady at the back of the room got up and said: "What you have told us is rubbish. The world is really a flat plate supported on the back of a giant tortoise."
The scientist gave a superior smile before replying, "What is the tortoise standing on?"
"You're very clever, young man, very clever," said the old lady. "But it's turtles all the way down."

The pankake has been rolled, that's the answer. Now we just need to work out the filling...I think that's where the banana comes into play.

hmm, yes. I'd forgotten all about the turtle.
So now we've been able to couple the pancake and banana theories, but where does this fit in with the turtle theory (which specifically states the earth being flat and roughly circular, so not banana shaped).
The only thing I could think of is that either the turtle or the elephants have a craving for bananas, but who is going to feed them and what will happen when they do (I know it will likely be Rincewind ending up doing it )?

Earth is suspended from heaven, by a thread, and its in the north pole.
Santa Claus uses the same thread to climb down to Earth around Christmas, and since he and his little people are afraid of us humans climbing up the thread and invading them, releasing his workers from slave labor, bringing in democracy, Hollywood, curry and Jerry Springer, they have kept it as a secret and made up a story about reindeers and all that. Think about it, how many flying reindeers have you seen so far?

No, No, No! It's very simple. The banana-nut pancake rests on the back of a giant turtle which rests on the backs of other giant turtles, ad infinitum.

On a related note:
Big bugs have smaller bugs
Upon their backs to bite 'em
And smaller bugs have smaller still
And so ad infinitum

And on yet another related item,
What if a book's index referred to itself? Could you create Xeno's index?

I thought Atlas held the world on his back. Zues made him do it for leading the Titans into battle.
But then the question poses, what did Atlas stand on? Oh, probably the turtles.

Not 1 thread. There are many. Earth is multi-threaded & probably designed using OO Concepts. The turtle also was introduced later to add a new functinality - earthquake; whenever the turtle gets tired & tries to shift the weight we have an earthquake.

The Turtle Moves!
Great A'Tuin swims through the voids of space.
If we knew the sex of Great A'Tuin we might know what awaits the world (no further spoilers, read the books...).
