Depends what you are trading and what is more important to you, -- direct access, fast execution, availability of financial instruments beyond stocks, customer service, commission structure, online research tools, reliability.
I use Interactive Brokers, -- $0.01/share for stocks, $2.40/contract for futures, execution is within a fraction of a second. More importantly, they provide an API to their server, and you can program your own trading systems against it.
But if you are not looking to do it for living, then Scottrade will do just fine, -- at $7 fixed commissions and no inactivity fees, they are hard to beat.

looks like not a lot ranchers is trading on line.
yes, i am just trying to find another way to invest. i did not do it before, because i think it is too risky. but then i realized risky as it is, it may be a better investment than blackjack. a friend of mine told me scotttrade is good. but that is a while back, so i am not so sure now.
how about let us keep posting on stock trading, think about it, if you can make a fortune on stock trading, then you can retire earlier, you can spend everyday in a starbucks, do all the java programming you like......

or create a program trading engine. Then you can code, make a money-printing machine, get rich and retire. Simple.
