what is diff betwn java and javax?

hi friends can any one explain me in short why do sun uses this to naming schemes java and javax and
what is diff betwn java and javax on technical level?

The javax api's have all been added since the original release of the java api's and at one stage weren't considered part of the core api's. Swing for example was a separate downloadable library many moons ago. These days the javax librarys have been integrated into the java core api's but the naming convention has remained for backwards compatibility

Nigel, if the names are there for backwards compatibility, shouldn't swing still be in com.sun.java.swing??
