That's OK Ali! Now I C why you were resisting it so much...but I guess XML is not that boring!
Hi Savita...you can get XMLWhiz at www.whizlabs.com/jwhiz.html
Please let me know if there is anything else I can do to help.
Hi Sai,
Well there will be 4-5 questions from XML Query, but almost none from XML Pointers. I don't remember any questions I got from XML Pointers...but they are quite powerful, so I will recommend them anyway.
Please let me know if there is anything else I can do to help.
Love

Hi Kelly,
Congrates kelly! for securing the marvelous score in the xml certification exam. Its really great..... I was really impressed with ur score and need ur suggestions.
It is after seeing this discussion, I'm also planning to take xml exam. I know the basics of xml and xsl and sax. Infact I used xml files as the data store for storing and retrieving the data with the help of sax. After seeing this discussion i came to know that i need to learn a lot in xml. So I decided to take the xml certification exam. Could u pls. suggest me how long will it take for me to prepare for the exam?
Here is one small doubt. What is the basic differece between XSL and XSLT? Until now i was thinking that both are same. But after reading some tutorial i came to know its wrong. But didn't get the clear cut differece between the two. PLs. clarify my doubt.
Waiting for ur reply,
Regards,
Raseswari Achanta.

Dear Raseswari,
Thanks for your appreciation!! It's so fulfilling!! It's really good that you are planning to go for the XML certification. XML is the technology of tommorow!
Well as far as your preparation goes, I guess you should keep 1-2 months if you want to go for a good score. Since you are not totally new to XML I am sure you won't have much problems. And for my suggestions for preparation I guess you have already gone through my first mail of this thread. Also go through the links I have given in it, e.g. Ajith's thread is also there, it will be really useful.
As far as your doubt is concerned, yes you were wrong before. XSL and XSLT are two different things. Actually XSL has 3 parts, first is XPath which is used to query XML documents, second part is XSLT, which is used to transform XML documents from one kind to another kind. The third part is XML rendering, which is used to render XML documents. So, XSLT is just a part of XSL and not same as XSL.
I hope I have been of help to you, please let me know if there is anything else I can do to help.
Dear Savita,
You are always welcome!
AS far as XML bible goes, yes the author has given only 5 chapters free, to get the full book you got to buy it, but let me tell you that it's really worth buying this book if you are looking at working with XML in long term. Also consider reading Inside XML as I have been hearing a lot about this book specially for certification purposes.
I hope it helps! Please let me know if there is anything else I can do to help.
Love you lots!
Kelly

ThankU for ur valuable suggestions...
Now the difference betweeen XSL nad XSLT is very clear to me. Yaah i have seen all the valuable links in this thread and will definetly go through Mr.Ajith's thread also.
According to ur suggestions i will start preparing for XML Bible.
I have got two more books on XML. XML by Unleashed and Java with XML-- o'rielly publications. How far will these books be helpful for certification?
Thank u once again....

Dear Awais Bajwa,
Thanks a lot for appreciation!!! It makes me happy and proud of myself!!
Good that you have been working in Java for some time. It builds your programming skills and understanding of the software development. You are right, DTD's are quite old and have been used for quite some time now but Schema's are a bit new and they are an alternative to DTD's for defining the grammar for XML documents. Schema's are extremely powerful and have lots of advantages over DTD's specially in the context of XML, so the XML community is fast moving towards Schema's. It's good that you are looking towards getting XML certified, it will go a long way in your development as an XML developer. For the resources you can go to the following link:
http://www.whizlabs.com/products/xmlwhiz/ibm-xml-faq.html
it will give you links to almost everything you need for the exam. Well you are most welcome to write to me on this thread, I regularly read it and I promise to support you to the best of my abilities.
Please let me know if there is anything else I can do to help.
All the best!!!

Dear Pallie,
Sorry I forgot to answer your query in my last mail. Yes, XML Certification is harder than SCJP, but not very much. Passing is equally tough (or easy ;-)) in both the exams but when it comes to scoring I would say XML is harder, I haven't heard the kind of scores we hear for SCJP. Well for books and resources please refer to the links I gave in the starting of this thread, one very useful link is
http://www.whizlabs.com/products/xmlwhiz/ibm-xml-faq.html
As far as SCWCD and XML are concerned, I believe you should first go for SCWCD, I have heard that it has more respect than XML certification. Please don't think that I am demeaning XML certification. I am myself SCJP and XML but not SCWCD. But my current view is that SCWCD has more respect than XML as Sun is promoting it much better than IBM is promoting XML. Lots of people know about SCWCD but a very few care about XML certification. Though in the long run XML will emerge as THE technology but currently I would suggest that first go for SCWCD and then XML.
Hope it helps. Please let me know if there is anything else I can do to help.
Dear Raseswari,

Dear Pallie,
Well I guess I have spoken a lot in the last mail. Please don't take my words on the face. Why don't you ask Ajith about it? He has been around for quite some time and I am sure he has a better understanding of the matter.
Are you listening Ajith?
Hope it helps

Dear Raj,
Thanks for your appreciation! and wishes! Well when we are saying XML design it's not the OOAD design that we are talking about. It is about XML, I mean where to use, how to use. Which part has what functionality? What will alter if I require a particular change in the system? It's basically an understanding of the various componenets of XML and related technologies and their interlinking.
If you are new to XML and can't use it in your current project, then consider making few sample applications, may be few web pages only or making two simple applications talk to each other using XML. As far as the preparation goes, it depends on how good a programmer you are. If you are experienced, then it won't take much time and effort to learn XML even if you are new, otherwise locate a little extra time and effort for that. For a good programmer new to XML I would suggest 2-3 months for a good score. 2-3 hours everyday should be enough.
Hope it helps!
Please let me know if there is anything else I can do to help.
All the best!
Kelly

Dear Doug Wang,
Thanks for your appreciation! I am an IBM certified XML developer. Or are you asking which is the next certification I am going for? well, then the answer is SCWCD.
Please let me know if there is anything else I can do to help.

hi there
i have cleared XML paper with 74 percent after reading only 3 weeks , b4 20 days i didn't know any thing abt xml , now i m certified .
books i concerned were Charles GoldFarb(best from exam pt of view) , Wrox Beginning XML ,XML By example(fine book) and Bible(worst book from exam pt of view)
whiz lab s/w is useless as IBM guys didn' ask any syntax question, paper was 90 percent scenario based that's why i cleared that , they test yr analytical skills not xml syntax
sso don't need to spend money on xml whiz . sample paper is much easier than real one , timing is problem , 74 q in 90 min ,didn't have enuff time to review all so first thought should be corect one. paper fees is 75 USD.

Hello all,
First - Kelly, great advice you have provided to us, thank you! It helped me!
For all of you who plan to take the IBM XML cert exam and have *not* programmed XML at all (and know HTML really well), studying with literature only will just get you by! I took the exam today (without EVER writing an application using XML) after about 2 weeks-worth of studying and JUST barely passed. Take Kelly's advice and program with XML!
Cheers,
Beth

Hello kelly.
Let me congratulate you for your great score.I saw your score on whizlabs site.
I am preparing for IBM xml certification.
I struck at the following questions. If possible please send me the answers of the following questions.
Answer to any question will be highly appreciated.
QUESTIONS:
1)Flat file editors & command line XSLT interpreters are considered to be the most important componants of XSLT development environment.
What are the most important componants of DTD development environment?
What are the most important componant of XML development environment?
2)What the "XML test cases" are supposed to exercise/contain?
3)It is recommended to go for single step XSL tranformation when processing logic is highly interrelated.
When to go for multistep tranformation?
4)Is it possible to convert SCHEMA to DTD?
5)Can we use both XSL & CSS in one stylesheet?
6)true/false
It is standard practice to use either XSL-FO or CSS for formatting a document, but not both simultaneously.
7)What is the input to XSLT?
XML file & XSL file
or Dom tree & xsl file
Cheers

Dear Shyam,
First of all sorry for being so late! Actually I met with an accident and was on bed for more than a month and thus didn't participate on this forum. Also my email-id is no more valid as it has been blocked.
As far as your queries are concerned Mapraputa has answered them extremely well! Thanks Mapraputa!!! as far as the following point is concerned:
3)It is recommended to go for single step XSL tranformation when processing logic is highly interrelated.
When to go for multistep tranformation?
is concerned...even I haven't used multistep transformation as yet but from what I have read till now it is required to maintain intermediate steps of the transformation for understanding and maintainability. It is similar to breaking a large procedure into smaller methods for better comprehension.
Hope it helps.
Please let me know if there is anything else I can do to help.
Regards
Kelly
