Exam Confirmation mail says my voucher no is valid for only --
311-081 Sun Certified Web Component Developer for J2EE 1.4 beta exam .
But the book i purchased, SCWCD Exam Study Kit says it as SCE 310-080.
Are they both same?

Part of the goal for Sun in doing the beta exam is to determine which questions are the best, and then to determine what the passing grade will be. If history is any indication it will probably be 4 - 8 weeks before beta takers will know if they passed or not, another reason to be patient!

So is there any other book that covers all the new exam objectives ?
Right now all I hv is Hanumant&Jignesh. Is it good enough to start with??

Guys
I don't have the voucher but I kind of see a deja vu situation. We had something very similar in SCBCD beta. Throughout the preparation you won't be sure if you would make it to the beta as vouchers do not guarantee anything. If you are very good, okay. Otherwise you might prepare as much as you can and try taking a shot in the first week. Most of the guys who took early for SCBCD took it because they wanted to be sure they can make use of the voucher. Some of them could not pass because they were not adequately prepared. Nevertheless their inputs were invaluable for others who took the exam later. SCBCD almost ran to the full duration of the beta.
I would still feel SCWCD beta is harder because SCBCD was sharply focused. Just one document of EJB 2.0 specs. We also had books Monson-Haefel and Roman covering the subject though not exam specific. With SCWCD you have at least two specs to cover plus patterns. Add to that K & B's assertions that the new exam version is a lot harder.
I would still feel the most difficult of everything could be scheduling the exam itself. Five hour slots are difficult to get. Most of the exam sites (there are very few anyway) that open on Saturdays close around 1pm making exam taking on week-ends nearly impossible. Looks like the candidates should ask Prometric look for a slot and reserve it.
May I suggest candidates not to debug programs when they return to work after the exam?
My very best wishes to everyone taking the exam.

Hi Lakshmi,
It's nice to see you here in JavaRanch.com... Hope u remember me...
There will be Head First SCWCD for the new version of the SCWCD exam... I hope it will be published after the official exam is released round about March...
SCWCD Exam Study Kit is good for the objectives that are common with the new objectives, especially in servlet portion... By the way, did u receive the beta exam voucher number from Prometric?

Don't know what the latest word on this is, but I just sent my email off and got the standard... "our box is full, we are behind" message. I'll post if I receive a voucher (indicating that more may be available)
Thanks for starting this thread, good stuff.

In this exam, even a day is important for preparation. Even though I had applied on the very first day the 23rd of Dec., I haven't got my voucher yet. I think it's not a fair deal as consider people getting voucher the same day. They are at least 4 to 5 days ahead of us in preparation. It doesn’t make a sense to start preparing unless you are sure about the situation. But anyway I am not happy with the way Sun conducts their Beta Exams. It's becoming similar to SCBCD exam.

I'm not happy either, frankly. I emailed at the beginning as well, and have been getting a run-around from Sun and Prometric. Most recently, I got an email about 5 minutes ago from a Ms. Green at Sun stating that there is no beta for SCWCD running... so someone ought to go run down to her office and correct the matter. (Not to mention that I'm going to be just a wee bit frustrated if I don't get a voucher, after having made sure to apply at the earliest possible moment.) Sun needs to fix how these vouchers get given out.

Hi Rajesh/Theodore,
I also give up. It seems they are sending vouchers alphabetically.
I find the IBM exam techniques much better even though they have started charging $10 for their practice exam.
Even last year also I never faced any problem with IBM.
Well anyway good luck to all the guys who received their vouchers.

You have to provide your Prometric ID in order for Prometric to keep a record.

This is because only a small group of people know about the Beta event, like Mr. Bates, Kathy (involved in designing the beta), Evelyn (the beta coordinator), etc.
I guess it is normal because it is difficult and meaningless for unrelated people to know about these events.
So, dont be too unhappy.
Nick.

Though I've emailed for a voucher, I have yet to get word on its status. Lets assume that I do not get a voucher. When will the 1.4 be available? If it is to be released later, should I just take the 1.3 and get it done with? When the 1.4 is released, will there be a 'migration' exam, similarly to the 1.2 to 1.4 SCJP exam?
Thanks!

Hi Michael,

When will the 1.4 be available?

It should be around Mar to May 2004, cos beta result will be announced at the end of March 2004.

If it is to be released later, should I just take the 1.3 and get it done with?

It depends. Since there are around 40% different between 1.3 and 1.4, if you are familiar with JSP 1.2 and Servlet 2.3, then go ahead. Otherwise, it is better for you to prepare for the new exam.

When the 1.4 is released, will there be a 'migration' exam, similarly to the 1.2 to 1.4 SCJP exam?

Yes.
Nick.

Um, no. I am unhappy and I think I have a decent reason to be.
I've done exactly what was asked in the forum to request a voucher, and am getting nowhere on it. I waited the 5-7 business days as requested in the original posting, and got back a response that was worthless.... so yeah, I'm not happy. The process is broken and needs to be fixed.
Yes, I realize that this is a free matter to help beta test the exam, but seriously, if only a few of us are having problems and saying something, it begs the question of how many others are having problems and not speaking up.

I just got mine as well. *whews* It sounds like the forwarding mechanism's just a bit skewed, from the response I got.
Just something that should be looked into to make sure folks don't get deprived (or is that depraved ^_^) in the future.

All,
Please be patient in receiving a voucher, Prometric has received over 1000 email requests for vouchers and with the holidays they are behind.
If you sent an email to Prometric for a voucher and the 5-7 business days have passed with no voucher number in site, please send me an emial at [email protected] and I will personally check on the status. I will be back in the office on Monday, January 5th, 2004.
The exam number for the beta is 311-081, the 310-081 is for the live real version, they ARE the SAME exam "SCWCD 1.4", it's just different numbers to differentiate from the beta and real exam when it goes live in March.
Lot's of FREE voucher numbers are being sent out, but there are always candidates that request a voucher, sign up and never show up to the beta. Please request a voucher if you are actually going to take the beta exam. The voucher number is ONLY valid for this exam.
Again, I have allotted 5 hours for the beta to give you an opportunity to read and review each question and have the opportunity to give us your valuable comments.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
Thank you.
Evelyn

Nick,
Thanks for your reply. Though I have been writing servlets and JSPs for the last year, I'm not as familiar with the specifications as I should be. I just received my voucher for the 1.4beta today, so I'll attack the newer test objectives. Thanks!

Wow. I guess that means I oughta take it earlier as opposed to later. I'm glad I did get off my big rear and do some more email-chasing-down. (And, thankfully, that first week has my Regular Day Off, so I can go take it. Just means I need to take study guides with me on my birthday weekend.)
And thank you for the extra time, Evelyn. I hope that it helps with comments (as well as needed bathroom breaks for those of us taking it!).
