I hear the pay is better - though that doesn't necessarily mean much
Ah yeah... I knew you can be attracted by this after all, you need extra money to buy delicatessen for your three pet snakes...

Ummm, there's only one. And it just needs one $7 rat per month - pretty low-maintenance. I was thinking about getting some bearded dragons though - I hear they can be trained as SCJPs. Of course it may be tough getting jobs for them in the current market - but maybe they could write for Wrox.

You can probably have more luck with O'Reilly. I am not sure Wrox will go for it:

I wish I had the talent and the tools to edit those pics. I'd have one with all the Sheriffs and Bartendenders...the bottom would say Professional? JavaRanch.

I retaliated
I also moved former #13 rather far off Jim and put her between Thomas and Ajith, where she can be relatevely safe - they both are married. Not that they are severely disinterested, but probabaly ineligible

Hey, you were the one who put my picture next to hers in the first place. Make up your mind. And when you comment on the relative safety of her new position between Thomas and Ajith, you overlook the fact that Tony is her other neighbor. (!)

Well, when I put your picture next to hers I did not know you are so dangerous. But after reading your following comment...

And when you comment on the relative safety of her new position between Thomas and Ajith, you overlook the fact that Tony is her other neighbor. (!)

Nope. How could I overlook Tony? I did so because he does look severely disinterested.

New Riders has the coolest covers, especially "Essential MySQL" and "Essential XML".
It cracks me up that dude cares about the cover of a book!!

Well, all good programmers possess such a developed aesthetic feeling that it can be easily hurt by lack of creativity in book designers or by putting on the cover portraits of authors whose appearance doesn't meet Hollywood's standards; therefore, it is extremely important to point publishers attention to this issue.

I agree that New Riders have cool covers (and good books, from the few I've examined carefully). However they don't seem to publish the titles you name, Bryan. Perhaps MySQL and Inside XML? I also like the original cover on the Python Essential Reference. And there's Inside XSLT. Anyway...

Hey that picture on the cover of "Inside XML" DOES kinda look like XML . At least the proposals that Map keeps putting out.

Now there's an idea... why doesn't WROX hire good looking models to stand in for the ugly white guys on the covers? Other than their mothers, who would know?

Thomas, why dont you write a book? Wrox could save a quite a sum on good looking models
No, really, it would be to have a book with you on the cover.

Well, now you've given me a challenge. After extensive research (translation: looking at the names in the original photo) I ascertained that her name is Judy Skubal. After even more extensive research (translation - stopping by DigitalGuru on the way home, locating a copy of the book, and flipping to the author bios) I ascertained that Judy has a husband named Alan and has 3 children. Shortly afterwards I lost interest for some reason and found a copy of "Effective Java" instead, so the trip was not a total waste.
With reference to the main topic of this thread, I should point out that Effective Java has a fairly boring cover, like most of the official Sun stuff, but is nonetheless a very good book.

I am impressed. Jim, you are a real geek!
1. You cannot miss a challenge
2. You deal with it in a consistent logical way
3. A copy of "Effective Java" is sufficient satisfaction for canceled romance

Wow! There's only one Judy Skubal in the whole country.
According to four11.com, there are 16 Thomas Paul's in NY alone. And the best part is that none of them are me!

Thomas- I think we're all relieved to know that there aren't sixteen of you. Especially the other people of New York.
Map- I figured getting the actual phone number was pretty trivial at that point, with no particular reward. I mostly wanted to point out that her name was in fact printed on the cover, so I found it amusing that no one else had thought to look there.

I would just like to say that you have made us all very happy here at wrox with all the suggestions for the covers
btw, here is a comment we got sent in once that you might appreciate:
"The people on your covers are obviously not programmers. Why does wrox pay professional models to put their photos on the covers?"

Yeah, the idea was great, but realization is somewhat flawed. Here is my1 version.

1. There was a plot against my cover, so I cannot guarentee that what you see is genuine Map's Wrox cover

Yes, that is me on the cover, I'm more photogenic than I'd realized. Where're my spots and goofy teeth? My greasy hair and thick rimmed glasses? That's the miracle of digital photo editing I guess...
