Eleison Zeitgeist : Damn those Stupid, Arrogant Americans... look at what they are ******* up in Iraq now... thank GOD WE are not as stupid as THEM.
KA : Actually many of them think that US actions in Iraq are justifiable. Nevertheless is a big and expensive mess the US has got itself into. They may be wrong to sit in judgment, but they definitely have the right to say "we want no part of it".

Eleison Zeitgeist : we Indians may not have the most money, buildings, etc.. Outside we may not be superior to them, but inside we are superior and thats where it counts.
KA : Possibly a popular thought among the kindergarten set. Most adults (in India or anywhere else) do not consider this a valid political opinion.

JM: That's the same amount I remember from when I got it in 1997,
So basically what's the difference when the soldiers are relatively safe and when there is an official war? $225 number just looks ridiculous even if nobody makes guys to sign in.
This reminds me an interview with my favorite teacher. He said that his profession should never be too profitable, for not to attract wrong kind of people. Perhaps there is similar logic at work for US military, to pay enough to attract enough people, but not much enough to attract wrong kind of people...

Oh, I would kick Sylvester's ass. With God's help, I would fill Rambo's drinking water with blood, invade his tent with frogs, populate his M-16 with locusts, and send thunder and hail on Rambo's head. Do you think Rambo would have the guts to fight against the Alpha and the Omega?

what are the possibilities of a communist Army guy working in siberia being religious too

Yeah, I got a happy one, too. After the two years of draft, I was offered to extend my military service as an officer, so I accepted. Well, the officers don't live in the baracks, they get their own place, provided to them by the Army. The Army couldn't find a place for me, though, so they negotiated with the local textile factory to house me in the all-women dormatory. End of story.

I suggest you start a new thread, IKK. We can discuss all you want about the hair color of the Russians there. My mother always told me, "Never hijack a thread, it's sinful".

Its not an opinion to discuss, just wanted to know facts. This is a dying thread I am only trying to give some life to it . Some one already hijacked this thread waybefore if you look at the number of topics that have been discussed in this thread apart from the main topic too many

I think you are making your conclusions about the Russians by observing the Russians in New York city, and especially the particular part of NYC, Brighton Beach. That's what misleads you, -- Brighton Beach and NYC in general are not America, it's a separate country with its own culture and attitude. Just look at yourself, -- you like the proximity of 5,000 people that you see near your neighborhood every day. An average American would probably prefer 5,000 acres of private land instead, far from NYC. Same relationship holds between the average Russian American and the Russian Americans living in NYC.

EK: Sounds like a good deal.
My girlfriend's brother was drafted in the midst of democratization, and from his letters it was clear that their main strategic goal was not to die from hunger He was sent to Far East to some border-keeping unit. They had a farm to feed themselves, because at that time our government was busy with pursuit of happiness, and feeding the Army apparently did not make them any happier. Besides raising chickens, the guys obtained their ration by robbing local villages, but this business became more and more problematic, because the local population armed itself at amazing speed. At certain point, they figured locals had better arms than the Army. How did it happen, well, their officers' bosses were also busy with pursuit of happiness, and what would make you happier when inflation is 100% a month -- to send money to some god-forsaken unit or to put them on ~100% a month account? So our officers did not get any money for months, but heck, they also wanted to participate in democratic pursuit of happiness, so they sold what they could to locals. There were victims from both sides, but who said democracy would come easy?
After he completed his service, they did not have money to pay for his return. I forgot details, he was taking trains for two weeks to get home, I should ask Lariska she must remember all the details.

Yep, we had the same setup in our battalion, -- a farm, pigs, etc. In addition, my commanding officer would often send me to the local civil building site to steal the materials whenever we needed to repair the barracks. Oh, what a time!

So the story I heard from Russian ... sorry Ukrainian sources, about Russian soldiers posted in southern Siberia using their hi-tech tank and helicopter to mark and hunting deers, boars etc, seems to be true.
