A new forum look isn't as hard as the underlying engine. That's where the bulk of the work was!

Indeed. And the truth is we actually tried to make it look pretty much the same as before!

No, let's stay with the current page at http://faq.javaranch.com/java/JForumTransition
I changed the setup so that it's now readable by everyone. That was an oversight on our part; sorry about that.

I agree with this, it was really helpful

I agree, too. I'll look into this.

Thanks a lot, this is now resolved

There is a option to upload a picture in our profile.
But why haven't you guys displaying that picture besides our post( i mean like the Saloon titles).
Is there any reason or jforum does not support ! !

We like to keep things clean, and displaying the picture next to the post is not We could display so much information there, but we want to keep it clean and simple.

  • I like the snappier response times, and the new look isn't bad either. Best of all
is the new preview button when posting. This was a lot of work, so congratulations
for pulling it off. Now I understand why some of the problems with the old forum
    weren't being worked on.

  • Treimin Clark wrote:

But "My Posts" section in the new forum software displays our own messages only. It doesn't display who is the last poster; so we can't track whether someone replied or not.

I see that there is now a "last post by" column, which is good, but it's still hard to scan
for new replies. Might it be possible to see a tabular view without the content of the post?
If not, how about a more striking visual separator between posts? As it is, it is hard to
find where a long one ends, especially if it has multiple code and quote blocks.

  • One thing I notice is that markup (such as B bold tags) no longer work within code
blocks. (Now the BBCode tags show through: example.) On the plus side, neither do
smilies, and they had been causing serious trouble.

I got following message many times when i click recent post or hot post even when i click "Welcome to our new forum software. See thread for details."

Aaack! You caught us with our pants down! Here we are, tinkering with the servers and you show up. How awkward! Try back in just a minute... Sincerely, the red faced JavaRanch staff.

Why is there a More Smiles hyperlink and that opens up in a Pop Up. Could that also be included in the Emoticons rather than popping up in a new window?

It's been suggested to make the content expandable, maybe by way of a little "+" button to click on. We put that on the wish list; no promises, though.

If not, how about a more striking visual separator between posts? As it is, it is hard to find where a long one ends, especially if it has multiple code and quote blocks.

That's a good suggestion; it'll be in the next release.

    Another Problem,

In the UBB forum, we can check the "read by recipient"/"unread by recipient" status for each private messages (sent messages). But we cannot see it in new JForum.

I wouldn't call that a problem. Personally, I like it on privacy grounds. I've added an entry to http://faq.javaranch.com/java/JForumTransition that this is no longer possible.

That's the message you see when the server is being upgraded. We updated the software several times over the weekend; this must have happened at one of those times. It takes about 30 seconds to restart the server, and during that time, none of the forum pages are accessible.

good work guys.. The software looks wonderful.

Hye why am i transfered to coderanch.com from javaranch and there is a line saying "Just Moderators are live on here. If you are not a moderator and stumble upon this, it is not live yet. Please go to javaranch.com."?

    what does that mean?

It means you may have come to the new site a few moments before we actually opened it to the public, and now have an old Javascript file in your browser cache. Empty your browser cache, and you should see that message go away.

I still need to adapt to the new look and feel  . One new feature I really like is the View count. However I think there is still an error with it. There are lots of posts where the View count is less than the Reply count.

My guess is that the reply count is from the actual replies, hence, is correct. However, the view count is new, and hence, is a count of the views since the forum starting counting it. And there are likely to be lots of topics that haven't been viewed, or viewed very little, since the the new forum started to count it.

Views prior to January 3rd don't count whereas posts prior to January 3rd too. New threads shouldn't have this discrepancy.

    Another Problem,

When the code tag is rendered, it has a link named "copy to clipboard" on the top of the code fragment. When we click on it, a message says the code is copied to the clipboard, but it doesn't work. Check the following sample:

This worked fine for me when I tested it. Perhaps another function requiring Javascript and you may want to check your settings.

Also, I'm very impressed guys. Well done on the migration.

See this thread for discussion. The required Javascript functionality is disallowed in many browsers by default; the Javascript code has no way of knowing of the failure.

You may not have understood. Access to the system clipboard is specifically forbidden by security policy in many browsers. Internet Explorer, of course, allows it by default, because IE allows everything by default! But in Firefox, you have to jump through hoops to turn it on. See

    http://kb.mozillazine.org/Granting_JavaScript_access_to_the_clipboard.

Here is a hideous hack involving Flash which lets a programmer accomplish it in Chrome:

The flash solution actually will break with Flash10 installed since they wised up on security there also.
