However getting the local government to accept those things might be a bit of a problem; I don't know if the safety inspectors around here are familiar with rocket mass heaters. Probably they would just treat them like ordinary wood stoves and require them to be X inches from other furnishings in the usual way.

portland, oregon now has building codes that include rocket mass heaters.  Several other places are adding codes.  Insurance companies are having a look too.
