Martin Vajsar wrote:I live in a new house which is connected by optics, and the provider offers 10, 25 and 100 Mbps plans. I could afford the 100 Mbps quite easily, but the truth is I would not utilize it. I haven't hit even the limits of the 10 Mbps plan yet.

Update: there's a new provider in the house, and he offers 100 Mbps plans cheaper than the original provider's 25/5 Mbps plan. So I've switched. The new provider is less reliable (I've never measured the full 100 Mbps with him, while I've always measured the nominal values with the previous one) and in particular has worse connection abroad, but my upload to the office server improved dramatically (on average, at least), which was most important to me.

This is the best result I've measured so far (slightly after midnight on a workday.... ):

My office is really bad. It is an old facility and we think the problem is internal ... Corporate won't rewire it. When we ( IT Department ) need to download anything big like a CD image we either do it at home or start the download on a spare machine and leave it alone for 2 - 3 hours.

I tested twice:

1)
Ping 92 ms
Download 0.39 mbps
Upload 1.15 mbps

2)
Ping 14ms
Download 0.42 mbps
Upload 0.95 mbps

Internet speed is ever improving, I've moved, I have a new Internet / TV / telephone provider.

There are ISPs that offer 100 Mbit/s connections, or even faster. I guess it does cost the white out of your eyes, though (to literally translate a Danish expression... ).

And it doesn't cost the white out of your eyes anymore.

Wow! Almost 1 Gb/s upload and download speed? That's faster than many harddisks can read and write data. It would be faster to store large files in Google's cloud than on your own local harddisk!
