As with any other programming language, by writing lots and lots of code.
But one important key to learning JavaScript, especially for those of us coming to it from Java, is to realize that it is
not Java. Just because the syntax may be similar does not mean they are in any way alike. By not expecting JavaScript to act like Java, and to approach it on its own terms, is a key step to understanding the language.
Are you looking to write on Node.js ?
Right now, I've got my hands full with client-side coding. Perhaps someday...
