that 1GB is probably needed to receive all the latent spam they're going to send you in order to pay for it (no delete unread messages of course)?

What does a gigabyte of hard drive cost now? Maybe $2.00 or less? Administration may cost more than the hardware. In return Google gets the ability to gather information to deliver targeted ads to members of the scheme. They won't be reading the mail exactly but if you send a lot of messages talking about PCs you can expect to see Dell ads on the top of the GMAIL browser window. If the average user spends 10 minutes a day on GMAIL that is valuable 'face time' which Google can sell to advertisers. Probably for a premium rate given that the ads are targeted to people's interests.

I have to agree. Considering the sort of disk-space real estate and supporting infrastructure that they already have, offering a 1GB accounts to users and flashing clever context-sensitive ads looks like a great business plan. However, I dont see how this will benefit them if they were give POP3 access to these mail boxes (www.gmail.com says they wouldnt want to held our emails as hostages in google servers!).
Either way, good news for us!

So.... seems GMail may have to be put on hold.
The reason Google will be able to afford to give everyone free 1GB mail boxes is because they'll be scanning each of your emails and sending you self-directed advertisements (just like you see on the top of many of the JavaRanch pages).
This whole scanning of someones' private email is a bit controversial, as I'm sure you can guess.
Germans garotte Google Gmail over privacy
Privacy International is also against Google on this[/url]

Who would use a web based free Email system to send and recieve confedintial private E-mails anyway?
I think that since Google came right and said, "this is what we are going to do" and you click the "I Read and Understand it" checkbox, then why should all these other people care?
Ok, I can think of 1 reason. I have a GMail account and I say "Hey Jo, send me an Email". Jo didn't concent to having his Email scanned by Google. So I can see how that would cause some problems. Maybe google should only scan Email that is from an @gmail.com user. Surely there will be enough of those people to help support Google if they get to offer this service.
On the other hand, why does it have to be any different from how adSense works. Instead of scanning the Email on the server, why doesn't adsense just scan the text when the email is read from the HTML. How is this different? People don't seem to bitch about AdSense scanning their web pages.

I was under the impression that thats this is what they are about to do! Well, does it make sense to analyse thousands of junk mails (before user checks and deletes them) to come to wrong conclusions (which is always going to be either viagra, extension, mortage or free p0rn! )
That anti-privacy case is a scam - some one is trying to get their name in the media, either greedy or just being cheeky! After all, yahoo, hotmail and everyother major email service providers has similar clause in their 'Terms & Conditions' and no one even reads any of that!!
