I was forced to watch it because Hockey Night In Canada wasn't on tonight ( go Flames! ). What a farce. I've lost all respect for the show, the red head sucks beans. I can't believe they let him in the competition!
Oh well, hockey is back on tonight, everything is fine!

Yeah, I definitely can't understand why John is still in the competition (though he was much better than normal this week). Not that I watch American Idol or anything... not me.

Its the no hopers that that make it amusing to watch. I think the show's producers realise that too.

A few theories.
1. America assumes America is voting for the best. So they vote for someone else that is not as good, but still deserves to move on next week. Therefor, the assumed votes never go towards the good singers.
2. America is William Hunged. America wants to see the underdog win.
3. America finally figured out they have the power and are voting for the worst because, well, they can.

another explanation (which may be closer to the truth than you think: the voting is rigged to let a candidate who will cause a lot of talk about the show win in order to get more people to watch just to see what it's all about (thus increasing advertising revenue).
In the Dutch competition last year (which was plastered all over the media so everyone would be completely up to date on it whether you wanted to or not) the worst candidates seemed to win regardless.
The juries loved to flame them, which of course is good entertainment which means more watchers thus more advertising income.
This year the winner of last year was shown (on another channel) to say that he was sick of the way the candidates were being treated in the current running of the show (which is no worse than they were being treated when he was running, but that time he won so he didn't mind) and that the best candidates were eliminated early to let the farce continue (after all, what fun is it when in later rounds you know who will win because one candidate is a lot better than the others) which of course immediately qualified the guy as being someone who'd never have won a fair competition but he isn't smart enough to realise that

More seriously...

If you are intrigued by who wins these "Idol" competitions you have to remember an important factor. Who votes?

The best singer/performer is not necessarily going to win - the one who can persuadde people to vote will. I dont know the actual stats - but I'd imagine a HUGE percentage of the voting population is in the teenage girl demographic and that this effects the competition enormously.

An interesting fact is that Anmerican Idol has toll-free phone numbers, so gets a large number of callers. In "Australian Idol" calls cost premium rates and so you get a poll of the "stupid and gullable"!! (Who wants to pay for a TV program you dont NEED to pay for?) I suspect this further swings the voting demographic even heavier towards the teenagers who havent developed their full and proper defence mechanisms and a sense of cynicism for such money making schemes!

Same story in the UK, although I'd bet that a fair number of the voters are kids who are not actually paying the bill themselves.

What really makes me laugh are the phone in polls where the options are something like yes/no/don't care. It always amazes me when people actually spend time/money to register that they don't care about an issue!

Going back to the various Idol programmes, is anyone else getting a bit fed up of having the same carbon-copy people singing the same songs, series after series? They're not really worth watching any more. What I'd like to see is "Band Idol", where every week bands, not individuals, compete. The bands would have to write and perform a new song each week - this would have far more skill involved then simply parroting a song someone else has written.

Oh, and "Seacrest out!". Anyone else want to give him a slap whenever he says that?!

Yes I would love to see a battle of bands because the show is becoming repetitive. Its the same type of singers, singing the same songs; over and over and over and over again. For that reason, they are showcasing two supposedly Rockers. American Idol is still amongst the highest rated shows on TV. For that reason, they arent going to change much.

Sorry for resurrecting this old thread. John, the red head kid, is from season 2004.

Jessica Sierra did very well compared to Anwar and Anthony. I dont why she booted out. May be she doesnt have enough friends in FL compared to other two. She is thousand times better than Nadia.

I completely agree with you. Maybe her weight was an issue? She had the potential to reach the Top Five.

In fact, Jessica is one of my favourites. I was shocked when she got booted out. Simon said she lacked the "X" factor. If weight was an issue, then how come Ruben won the last season's American Idol? Or the weight issue only applies to female?

I believe that the weight issue only applies to women. Jessica Sierra was one of my top favorites also. I too am shocked that she was booted out.

Here is an interesting article for American Idol

Jessica just didn't have "it". She didn't capture the peoples 'hearts' (much like Anwar and Nikko). Weight had nothing to do with it. I think Scott should have been dropped after that dismal display.

It is interesting to note which songs the contestents are "allowed" to sing... I like the "hard rock" stuff and don't think I have heard any decent hard rock songs on the show.

How about have a true "idol" show where the song lists are more open.... Wouldn't you find it interesting to see the singers do some of the older rock stuff.... How about some Zep?

From what I've seen and heard of our local version the best (as in most talented) candidates are removed early to level the playing field for the remaining useless kids.
This guarantees a lot of speculation about who will win, which increases the number of people watching which in turn means good advertising revenue.

Tonight's bottom 3 will be:
1) Anthony Fedorov
2) Anwar Robinson
3) Scott Savol

The person that will receive the lowest number of votes will be Scott Savol. I think that Scott's loss tonight will coincide with this article.

No more musical theme, please. I nearly during the show. How come no one chose fast songs like "Fame"? My prediction for today's bottom 2 will be Anthony and Scott, same as last week's. But none of these two have been in the bottom 3 so far.

He really got a huge fan base out there, particularly female teenage fans, I guess. No matter how badly he was criticised by Simon, he never ended up in the bottom 3. But still, I think Anthony's performance was so much better than John Stevens's. Someone just has to be in the bottom 3 every week even though the quality of this season's contestants is great. It's getting harder and harder to choose who should leave each week. Anyway, I hope Bo, Anwar, Nadia, Carrie and Vonzell can make it to the top 5.

Its difficult to predict. Vonzell will get all African American votes. Cute Carrie will get all guys votes and Boo will get gals votes.
So... will wait and see. But public is more interested to know about gushy mushy suger coat idol judge Paula Abduls alleged affair with Corey Clark. My question is why he came up with this affair story when he is about to release his album and book.

Good marketing tactics!!!

Well I see a pattern in American Idol:
Season 1:
2 Finalists = Female + Male

Season 2:
2 Finalists = Male + Male

Season 3:
2 Finalists = Female + Female

Season 4:
2 Finalists = Maybe Female + Male
This scenario has Bo Bice in finale; however, which girl will accompany Bo?

Yes Coreys allegations coincided with his album + book release? It is a marketing ploy on his part.

Whether the allegations are valid, who knows? I dont think that Fox will hold Paula Abdul responsible if the allegations are proven valid. A Paula-less American Idol judge panel would spell disaster for the show. The chemistry between Simon, Randy, and Paula has contributed to the shows success over the years. Fox will not sacrifice removing Paula from the Judge panel. It is too risky. Instead, they will deny the allegations by portraying Corey as an opportunist whose allegations are driven by his desire to make money.
