need your advise!

hi guys!

My knowledge on Java programming is up to creating a simple applet. The problem is I have a project. It is an electronic exam that will be accessible to at least 280+ computers every hour in a day.

I would like to hear your advise on how could i start with the program. Should I create the program with simple J2SE and connect it with MySQL as database and run a simple application? Should I fast track my learning to J2EE and make it accessible via web browser? By the way, how J2EE works? in simple terms only please.

I would appreciate if you could also give me links on where to get example works or related to my upcoming project.

Thank you.

I don't know when the deadline for your project is, but J2EE is a big thing to learn. If you have the time and if you expect or want to work with enterprise Java in the future, it might be worth it to learn about J2EE. Start with Tomcat, servlets and JSPs. That will probably already be enough to make the application you want. EJBs are a more advanced J2EE subject.

If you don't have much time, there's nothing wrong with making a stand-alone application or applet and connect to MySQL with it. I assume you're already familiar with programming Swing GUIs?

By the way, how J2EE works? in simple terms only please.

Volumes have been written on this subject, and there are many different aspects of J2EE. To get an idea about the scope of your question, have a look at the following: The J2EE 1.4 Tutorial.

J2EE's objective is scalability. You can do all the same things much simpler without J2EE.

I don't know about a "fast track," but here's a free online version of the first edition of Core Servlets and JavaServer Pages by Marty Hall...

Browsing this might give you an idea of the scope involved.
