Hello,

I'm new to Java (not to programming) and I'd like to learn language and then to obtain certification (SCJP).

Is it right book "Core Java 2, Volume I, Fundamentals 7th Edition" and "Core Java 2, Volume II -- Advanced Features, Seventh Edition" by Cay Horstmann to learn JAVA (before starting test preparation)?

Thanks for the opinion,
Val

Yes, it is a good book.

But for me the "Head First Java" book, is the best bang for your money.

"Thinking in Java" by Bruce Eckel is also very good.

hi ,

I would agree Head First JAVA is the best ...I would also recommend a book which is exclusively for SCJP ....its by the same authors...

gud luck

I also had a background in other programming languages and learned Java from "Core Java Volume I" (albeit an earlier edition). I think this is a great book to learn from. I haven't used any of the other books suggested here, so I can't offer a good comparison.
