You might want to try the problems at the Cattle Drive here on Java Ranch. There are several problems of varying difficulty that you may find help you understand Java better.

As for your other question, do you want to do this in Java or using a command from the operating system. If you want to do the former, then you should look at the methods from the java.io.File class. In particular, it contains methods to list all the files in a particular directory. Presumably, you will have to start at the root of the file system and work your way down the hierarchy, probably using recursion. If the later, what operating system do you use? There are commands for this in Linux and Unix, but I don't know about Windows.
