This is not necessary. while compiling file give source and target JDK.
Say when u compile files for 1.4 give javac -target <release>

In your '/Users/<someuser>' folder you should have a '.bash_profile' file - if not create one.
In this file you type:
Now your java is setup - just like on a window PC.
