I am trying to use the derby database and have reference to classes (Driver.Manager etc) that I think are contained in java.sql (or possibly javax.sql)package.

I have included statement 'import java.sql.*' but javac cant find the package - what is the file actually called within the file system so that I can search for it.

I have downloaded jdk1.5.0_06 from SUN.

Is there some 'url' or document that will describe to me where these packages should be located and how my environment on Windows xp should be setup otherwise I will keep banging my head against problems like this ?

Help would be appreciated - I know its basic stuff but without a description of this life is going to be very difficult.

Please copy and paste the exact error message that the compiler gives you, and a few lines of your source code in which the error occurs.

If the Java compiler can't find the packages java.sql or javax.sql, something must be really wrong - these are in the standard Java API.

A tip for future use, if you need to locate a java library when all you know is the package or class name, then use www.jarhoo.com

This has come in useful so many times. I recommend it.
