When I used to learn the (more advanced) core concepts of Java I used
* Core Java 2 - Advanced features, by Horstmann
* Java Programming, by Brett Spell

I found them to be very good - but that's 3 years ago now, so they might
be outdated. Perhabs you should take a look at the javaranch bunkhouse:

I first learned Java by reading Core Java by Cay Horstmann and Gary Cornell and I highly recommend it. I still use it as a reference.

Head First Java by Kathy Sierra and Bert Bates has collected some excellent reviews on Amazon.com.

Sun has a bunch of documentation available online including a Java tutorial. Be sure to checkout the Java API documentation.

I have found www.javacoffeebreak.com tutorials very helpful.

The tutorials on Sun are also very good once you start to understand things.

I have not found an all encompassing book as yet they all have there good and bad points

Best wishes
Dianne
