I have a car in my native state (Tamil Nadu). I'm planning to bring the vehicle to Bangalore and re-register it. I have already paid the road tax (life time) in Tamil Nadu. From what I understand, we have to pay the road tax in Karnataka again. While paying the Karnataka road tax,

a) Should we only pay the difference in tax amount or
b) Should we pay the entire tax amount as applicable in Karnataka and get the money I paid in Tamil Nadu back from the previous RTO?

And, any idea what is the approximate amount I have to pay as the tax for a 2001 model vehicle?

When I bought my bike few months back in Karnataka ,RTO in Bangalore asked me to pay LifeLong Tax(Rs 2000){+plus some bribe!}.If you pay lifelong tax, there is no need to reregister the vehicle. You can drive for unlimited time.If you reregister, and if you want to take vehicle again to TN,you will have to do it again in TN.
You have to keep LifeLong Tax receipt with you always as police frequently catch non-Karnataka vehicles.

Thanks for the reply. I know that changing the registration is optional, but I will do it anyway. Who knows what will happen to a vehicle with TN registration if Veerappan manages to kidnap Rajkumar once again (or someone else)

And, just checked with my friends. It seems that I can get back part of the tax I paid in Tamil Nadu, if I pay tax in Karnataka. But it might take years.
