It was developed by modifying and extending the C++ language. Here is the information about the history of Java.

Hi Vijay,

Good question but very common.

The Core Java Standard Edition has been written in C but 90% of the JAVA bootstrapped means written in JAVA itself.

Java Mobile Edition with C and Assembly.

Java 2 E E is, in JAVA itself only.

You can refer Sun site for more information.

Thank you.

yes, maybe you are right.
The Java programming Language evolved from a language named Oak. Oak was developed in the early nineties at Sun Microsystems as a platform-independent language aimed at allowing entertainment appliances such as video game consoles and VCRs to communicate .

"Java" is only a specification of a programming language and execution platform (the JVM). Jeff is right when he says it is written in English...

Anybody who wants to write an implementation of the JVM specification for a platform, can choose any programming language (s)he wants to do so. I guess Sun's JVM implementations have been written in C and/or C++ and partly in Java itself (a part of the standard API classes).
