Hi all,
I am in need of guidance on this subject.
This is not a school project nor work project. This is just to extend my knowledge of the language.

What I am trying to do is create a java application, connecting to a server ( likely a web server running SQL). The connection should be secure while retrieving/sending information. Users are allow to create/update their status.
Basically what should I look into? Reading materials?

I have some basic knowledge of java, and just asking for guidance on what I should look into.

Thank you.

I would have thought most of the bigger books will ahve that sort of thing in. Deitel has servers and a brief explanation of JSP (Java Server Pages) and Servers, as well as brief descriptions of SQL connections.
There are chapters in Horstmann and Cornell (vol 2) about "distributed objects" and "Database connectivity."

You might find their style not to your liking, so see if you can't borrow the books before buying them. There are extracts of Deitel's book on this page, so you can see whether you like their style or not.

There are bound to be others; have you looked in the Bunkhose Books page?
