See below.
I have already installed "java version 1.5.0" in my local desktop.
How do I find out the location or the path where I have installed my Java ?

C:\>java -version
java version "1.5.0"
Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.5.0-b64)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 1.5.0-b64, mixed mode)

C:\>echo %java_home%
%java_home%

Easiest wasy is to inspect your path.
In Windows 9x (98/me) open your autoexec.bat file in c:\
In windows 2000/XP right-click "my computer" -> properties -> advanced -> environment variables and inspect PATH.
Linux-don't know.
