I was trying to compile a program, but I got a message to use -Xlint:unchecked when compiling. What in the world is that?

It's a warning that you're not using Java's generics feature in the best possible way. It's perfectly OK to ignore this message, but if you use the command-line switch it mentions -- type that in betweeen "javac" and the name of the *.java file -- then javac will explain the situation in more detail.
